History and culture
The origin of place names
Danshui street is an old market town with a long history. It is said that in the late Song Dynasty, there was a small market called ShangXu, which was later renamed Guodu market. In order to protect the coastal area of Daya Bay, the Ming Dynasty set up the Danshui Acropolis. By the early Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, a large market town had been formed here, which was changed into Danshui market, and there were administrative organizations such as "department". After the Opium War, Huiyang became a place of trade import and export between Huiyang and Hong Kong. The commercial trade developed rapidly, and formed "big fish Street", "pig Street", "Lantern Street" and "rice Street" and other specialized commodity trading streets.
cultural relics and historic sites
Danshui old city historical and Cultural District, the core reserve starts from Dongmen street in the north, Chongya school in the south, Danshui Qiaotou market in the West and Baiyun fifth road in the East, covering an area of about 41.2 hectares.
The old urban area of Danshui still maintains the construction pattern and features from the Ming and Qing Dynasties to the Republic of China, with traditional commercial streets and living lanes as the main. Among them, there are 68 historical streets more than 50 meters, and the traditional commercial functions continue to this day. There are four municipal cultural relics protection units (Wenchang temple, Deng Zhongyuan's former residence, Danshui ancestral temple site, Deng Chengxiu's former residence - Huyuan), five district cultural relics protection units (Kuixing building, Guangyi guild hall, Danshui city wall site, liangxiu new residence, Zhenhe building), two immovable cultural relics (Deng's ancestral hall, Chongya Academy), and 104 historical buildings.
From the ancient Tanshui city wall near the Qiaotou market of Tanshui, you can see the old Tanshui street. There are Zhengyi street, Denglong street, MI street, Shuixiang street, Desheng street, etc. These streets are mostly named after the commodities they operate. For example, MI street sells rice, Denglong street sells lanterns, and Shuixiang street is the street that people carry water through.
Hakka culture
Danshui town has always been a place where Hakkas lived in history. In the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties, under the influence of the Qing soldiers going south, some Hakkas living in Meizhou moved to the East, South and West. Some Hakkas came to Huiyang. At this time, the Hakkas who moved to Huiyang and Huidong have been talking about Meizhou City (Meijiang district and Meixian District) for generations Meizhou Hakka dialect with urban accent. For hundreds of years, Hakka has influenced the neighboring dialects with its own advantages, but it is also inevitably influenced by the neighboring dialects, especially by Cantonese. Accepting some factors of these dialects, it gradually forms Huiyang Hakka which is slightly different from Meizhou dialect.
