Qing Dynasty and before
According to research, Pingtang may have been inhabited by ancestors 4000 years ago. Before the Qin Dynasty, it belonged to Baiyue. After the unification of Lingnan (214 BC), Guilin, Xiang and Nanhai were established in Baiyue. Pingtang belonged to Guilin.
Duanxi county was set up in the sixth year of the Ding Dynasty (111 BC). It is also under the jurisdiction of Cangwu (now Guangxi) county. Liang (502 AD) in the Southern Dynasty began to set up Liangde county and Liangde County in Xinyi.
In the fourth year of Wude of Tang Dynasty (621), Huaide was located in Xinyi county. And in Xinyi county (now Zhenlong) Pingtang belongs to Xinyi county.
In 976, Xinyi county was changed to Xinyi county.

In 1940, Xinyi was divided into four districts. Pingtang was under the jurisdiction of Heshui District, known as Lindong township. The Township Office was located in the ancestral hall of shaziguang Town, with linchao, Linzhong, shuangluo, Shangzhong, Beiyong, Yungui and other small townships under it.
Liberated in 1949, Xinyi set up the East, West, South, North and central districts, and Pingtang belonged to the East District.
In May 1950, it was divided into six districts. Pingtang belonged to six districts (Heshui District). Later, in memory of Huang guobing, a revolutionary martyr, it was once called guobing township. It governed 21 villages and peasant associations and carried out land reform.
In December 1952, Xinyi was divided into 15 districts, and Pingtang was divided into 14 districts (Heshui District), with Xinzhong, Huanglong, Shasha, luopai, Wanlong, Lindong, Daoliu and other 7 townships under its jurisdiction, while Gandong, Beinan, Beizhong, Xianggui, Luoluo and other 5 townships were under Qianpai's jurisdiction.
In 1956, Xinyi was merged into 103 townships, and soon into 86 townships and 22 central townships. Shasha Central Township was established, and Shasha, Lindong, Huanglong and other townships were under its jurisdiction. Qimian and Beiyong townships are under the jurisdiction of the Central Township of the thirteen districts (Qianpai).
In February 1957, the county withdrew its districts and merged 235 small townships into 36 Large townships. Pingtang merged Shasha, luopai, Wanlong, Lindong, Daoliu, Xinzhong and Huanglong into Shasha township. Gandong, Beinan, Yunkai, Xianggui and Luoluo merged into Beizhong township.
In May 1958, the county merged 36 Large townships into 20 townships. Shasha Township put Gandong, Beinan, Xianggui, Luoluo and Beizhong townships under the jurisdiction of Shasha township.
In 1958, the township was abolished, and eight people's communes were established in the county. Pingtang belongs to Heshui people's commune. It is divided into five battalions: Xinzhong, Shasha, Luoluo, Pingtang and Beiyong.
In 1960, the county was divided into 16 communes and 242 brigades. Pingtang was separated from Heshui and established Pingtang people's commune, which has 13 production teams, 3 farms and 293 production teams.
In November 1961, Heshui was divided into three communes: Pingtang commune, Beiyong commune and Shasha commune. In 1963, the three communes were merged into Pingtang people's commune, which has 21 production teams and 543 production teams.
In 1982, the commune was withdrawn and Pingtang district was established. 21 brigades were renamed as townships.
In 1986, it was renamed Pingtang Town, and the township was renamed administrative village.
