Maogou town is located in the southwest of Baojing County. The town government is located in Yonghe village, 38 kilometers away from Baojing County and 9 kilometers away from Huayuan County. It is connected with Fuxing town in the East, Huayuan County in the south, Xiushan County in Chongqing in the West and Qingshuiping town in the north. S259 provincial road runs through the whole area. The total area of the town is 186.65 square kilometers (2017), with 1434 hectares of arable land. It has jurisdiction over 17 administrative villages, 167 villager groups and 32900 people (in 2017), making it the township with the largest agricultural population in the county.

In 1996, with an area of 79 square kilometers and a population of 15000, the town government was stationed in Yonghe, with jurisdiction over Maoqi neighborhood committee and 20 administrative villages including Yonghe, duole, Maoping, Gantang, sheping, Yangping, lueshui, benlong, Shanzhuang, xialue, Tianjia, Maoyan, wodang, arch bridge, pianyan, Mala, Yuben, Yemao, Tongping and Kele. At the end of 2002, it borders Huayuan County in the East, Xiushan County in Chongqing in the west, Boji Township in the South and yezhuping town in the north. The town covers an area of 78.6 square kilometers and has a population of 17980, including 16500 agricultural people. It has 20 administrative villages and 131 villager groups. In 2005, Boji Township and Maogou town merged to establish Maogou Town, and the town government stationed in Maogou village; in the same year, administrative villages were merged.
