Xiliuhe town is located in the hinterland of Jianghan Plain, close to Wuhan, and is the southeast gateway of Xiantao City. Xiliuhe town connects Hanyang in the East, Honghu in the south, Xiantao City in the west, and Hanjiang River spillway in the north. It has a land area of 195.7 square kilometers (2017), a population of 57466 people (2017) and 147000 mu of cultivated land. It governs 64 administrative villages and 3 neighborhood committees. Due to the rising water level of the Yangtze River, the water of this river flows backward from east to west, so it is called Xiliu river. Xiliuhe commune was established in 1958, renamed Xiliuhe District in 1984, and Xiliuhe town was established in 1987. The original xiachabu town belonged to the third district of Mianyang County in 1949. Xiachabu commune was established in 1975, changed into Jiaopai management area in 1978, established xiachabu town in 1984, and rebuilt into a town under the jurisdiction of the city in 1986.

In 1996, Xiliuhe town covers an area of 113 square kilometers and has a population of 51000. In 2001, the former xiachabu town and some administrative areas of the former Duyao Township were merged into Xiliuhe town. In 2004, the town government was stationed in Xiliu River, with a population of 97501 and an area of 195.7 square kilometers. Duyao township is located in the east of the city, 33 kilometers away from the urban area. Sifang River and Tongshun river run across the East and West. Duyao township was established in 1958, renamed as management district in 1980, and restored to township in 1987. In 1996, it covers an area of 80 square kilometers and has a population of 25000. It has jurisdiction over 19 administrative villages, including Sangou, hongtuhu, zhupaikou, Batan, Wangchang, Liuhao, Duyao, renshengling, Huawan, Liugou, Mopan, huangjinba, Huangyao, Shuangfeng, Shuangsheng, Tangtai, zhoujiahu, Chunnan and Chunliang. In 2001, some villages were merged into Shahu town and others into Xiliuhe town.

History and culture

It is a famous historical town with rich cultural resources. Xiliu river is a big river running through the East and West. The river flows westward according to the time and situation. Therefore, the river is named after water and the town is named after river. As early as the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, there was an administrative system here. After more than 700 years of accumulation, Xiliu river has become a famous ancient town with outstanding talents.
