There are many mussels in Poyang Lake. Before liberation, many people went to the lake to pick up mussels and produce buttons. After liberation, button production developed rapidly, and many merchants gathered in the "hometown of buttons". After entering the 1970s, Deng Shishou, Zou Ledao and others took the lead in changing production, processing pearl cores with clam shells and using water surface to raise pearls. From then on, Zhouxi people had an indissoluble bond with pearl. Now, as long as you are in Zhouxi Town, it's like stepping into a pearl world. From every village comes the sound of electric motors processing pearl cores. On the water surface, there are pieces of white buoys with pearl mussels. Zhouxi is the largest pearl core processing and production base in China, with 10 town run backbone enterprises and nearly 1000 individual pearl core producers. It produces more than 400 million pearl cores annually. Freshwater pearls account for 80% of the total output in China, and its products are exported to all parts of the country and Southeast Asia.

Pearl Industry

The "massive economy" has begun to take shape. In 2006, the output value of pearl industry in the town reached 319 million yuan, and the net income of pearl industry accounted for 75.6% of the per capita net income of farmers in the town.
1、 Industrial development process
1. From button processing to Pearl River nuclear processing industry.
With the development of land transportation, the water transportation industry gradually declined. Zhouxi town began to develop the button processing industry with shells as raw materials, which also formed a certain scale.
In the late 1970s, due to the impact of the system and market, the button processing industry was in a slump. Zhouxi people tried to change again. They introduced shell processing technology from Hanshou County, Hunan Province, developed Pearl core processing industry with shells as raw materials, and sold them to the coastal areas of Guangdong and Guangxi for Mariculture pearls.
2. From Pearl core processing to Pearl industrialization.
To expand the industry, increase income and enhance the ability to resist market risk, we must have our own pearl breeding base, and develop related industries around pearl breeding, and gradually realize industrialization. As early as the 1960s, there was freshwater nucleate free pearl culture in Zhouxi. After the success of the trial culture of freshwater nucleate pearl in 1999, freshwater pearl culture has sprung up in the whole town. In a short period of seven years, the water area of pearl breeding has rapidly expanded from less than 200 mu in 2000 to 13000 mu, with more than 2400 farmers. In the past 30 years, after ups and downs, ups and downs, Zhouxi people have returned to rationality in their enthusiasm and steadily occupied the market initiative. Nowadays, American shells are mainly used for processing PRH, and PRH products are exported to Japan, the United States, Indonesia, Hong Kong and other countries and regions. In the late 1990s, after the pearl nucleus market fell into a low ebb, Zhouxi people, unwilling to fail, began to breed freshwater nucleated pearls. In a few years, they expanded the breeding area from zero to more than 30000 Mu inside and outside the town and the county. The waste of pearl nucleus processing and cultured shells were pulled up by Zhouxi people to another sunrise industry, namely, shell handicraft processing, with products ranging from single, low-grade necklaces and so on With the development of high-grade mosaics and lighting, online orders have injected sufficient stamina into this new industry, opening dozens of sales windows in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Yiwu and other places. Today, more than 3000 shell and Pearl core processors and more than 2000 pearl farmers in Zhouxi constitute the pearl industry chain of Zhouxi, which is the gold lettered signboard of "the hometown of freshwater pearls in China" for Duchang County.
