History and culture
March 3 Temple Fair
Every year around the third day of the third month of the third lunar month is the fair time of the market trade in Shun'an town of Tongling, Anhui Province, commonly known as the "March third" temple fair. During the meeting, the streets of Shun'an were bustling. Merchants and peddlers from all over the world, including peasant women, craftsmen, and public artists, come and go one after another. There are local people near, and businesses in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hunan, and even Guangdong and Guangxi far away. In the past, Shun'an held annual meetings, a general meeting every five years and a grand meeting every ten years. At the grand meeting, Yuejiashan in the east of the town and caizitan in the West will set up a stage to sing Mulian opera. The first performance is four days and four nights or seven days and seven nights, which is the so-called "four night red" and "seven day red".
According to textual research, Shun'an used to be an ancient post station. For some reason, the land and water transportation was convenient, and the number of residents gradually increased, gradually forming a small rural market town. In the late Western Jin Dynasty, the Northern War, a large number of Central Plains population moved to the south, known as "Yongjia southward". After the establishment of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, in order to settle the refugees, the rulers set up counties in the south. At that time, Tongling was originally located in Yanggu County, Xuancheng County, and Lingxian county was set up after the overseas Chinese set up their homes. The county government was set up in Shun'an town. Since then, Shun'an has become increasingly prosperous. After the unification of Sui Dynasty, Dingling county was abandoned and merged into Nanling County. In the early Tang Dynasty, Lu Yi was set up in Shun, named Linjin Yi. Later, it was separated from Nanling County and changed to Yi'an county. The county government was still located in Shun'an. After the Song Dynasty, polder fields flourished, and polder villages near Shun'an became rice producing areas. In this way, the rice in the polder area, the bamboo in the mountain area, and the fish and crabs in the East and West Lakes all naturally gather in shunanlai. It can be seen that Shun'an has always been the political and economic center of Tongling in history. After the Spring Festival and before the spring ploughing, it is a slack period. The climate is pleasant. Farmers are in urgent need of selling agricultural and sideline products and buying iron and wood agricultural utensils. Local and foreign merchants also take the opportunity to buy local products and sell daily necessities from farmers. At this time, it is possible and necessary to form a large trade fair in Shun'an. As for how the temple fair came into being and why it was held on the third day of March, there is no historical record. In this regard, there are many legends in the local folk, the most influential of which are two kinds: one is that in the end of the Tang Dynasty, the world was in chaos, and the poor people in Shun'an area were looted by the fire of war, with countless deaths and few left. The survivors built a temple and offered sacrifices regularly for the protection of the gods. The sacrifice day was set on the third day of March. Since then, on the third day of March every year, the people around them came to burn incense and offer sacrifices to gods, praying for the peace of the world and good weather. After a long time, a kind of rural custom has been formed, and the number of people coming is increasing year by year. Some businessmen and peddlers also set up stalls to do business. Farmers also bring grain and local products, adjust surplus and shortage, and exchange needed goods. Temple fair is gradually linked with business activities.
