History of villages and towns
"Maoshui folk song" records: "there is a green line beside majiaqiao, and the old Dai lives in the west of Xindai. Daishang used to be a market, but now the village is full of trees." This poem makes clear the origin of Xindai, that is, after the old Dai was ravaged by Japanese pirates, it turned into ruins, and then developed into Xindai to the southeast. Therefore, there is a popular folk saying that "there are old dais first, and then there are new dais.". In the Yuan Dynasty, Xindai belonged to Huating township. In the Ming Dynasty, Xindai developed rapidly. There was a saying that "there are 18 towns in the south of the Yangtze River, there is a new town in Xindai; there are 18 towns in Dongxiang, there is less than a new town in Xindai".
Historical evolution
In the Yuan Dynasty, Xindai belonged to Huating township. In the Ming Dynasty, Xindai developed rapidly. There was a saying that "there are 18 towns in the south of the Yangtze River, there is a new town in Xindai; there are 18 towns in Dongxiang, there is less than a new town in Xindai". in Ming Dynasty, yuanhuiqiao (commonly known as baojiaqiao) was the center of Xindai town's market, which had developed commerce, noisy market and stable life. There is a poem that says, "fish, shrimp and vegetables compete on the shoulders, all day long, Yuanhui bridge is noisy, east city drinks tea, West City drinks wine, and visitors walk on the rainbow waist.". Baojiaqiao is the center of the development of the market town, and it develops all around. Because Xindai is a water town, there are many bridges and many boats. There are dongzha bridge, nanzha bridge, xizha bridge and Beizha bridge around Baojia bridge. Now nanzha bridge and Beizha bridge are preserved, namely Taiping Bridge and Qingyun bridge (now listed as Pinghu municipal cultural relics protection unit). With the river as the center, the development of towns has formed a typical pattern of "well" shaped small towns in Jiangnan. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Xindai had Dongshi, Xishi, Zhongshi, Huajie, Shangtang and Xiatang, which had become an important commercial town in Northern Zhejiang. In April 1430, Pinghu county was established and Xindai was under the jurisdiction of Pinghu. In the 13th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, Xindai still belonged to Huating Township, with jurisdiction over 4 capitals (22-25 capitals) and 14 squares. According to the song of maoshui village, Xindai is "bordered by the golden mountains and rivers, and the Maohu lake is full of agriculture and mulberry. The irrigated fields have their own tides coming and going, and there are no worries about drought." In November 1935, Xindai district was reduced to one town and nine townships. In January 1946, Xindai district was reduced from one town and nine townships to one town and three townships. In December 1983, Xindai commune was divided into two groups, which were transformed into Xindai Township People's government. On May 26, 1987, Xindai township was withdrawn and merged into Xindai town. In July 1999, the township division was adjusted and xiuxi and Nanqiao townships were merged into Xindai town.
