Baoyan town

Baoyan Town, a town under the jurisdiction of Dantu District, Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province, is located in the south end of Zhenjiang city. It is the junction of Dantu District, Danyang City, Jintan district and Jurong City. It is the combination of Baoyan town and Rongbing town. It borders Yanling Town of Danyang City in the East, Zhixi town of Jintan District in the South and Baitu town and Maoshan town of Jurong City in the West. In December 2005, the former Baoyan town and the former Rongbing town merged to establish a new Baoyan town.

Historical evolution

Baoyan Town, formerly known as Yanba, is one of the famous ancient towns in Dantu District. The fragments of red pottery, gray pottery and printed pottery unearthed in 1976 in Mopanshan, southwest of Baoyan Town, can be considered as far back as the Shang and Zhou dynasties, where the ancestors lived. At the end of Ming Dynasty and the beginning of Qing Dynasty, suffering from flood, people built dams to stop the flood. As a result, the weir dam was regarded as treasure, so the village name of weir dam was changed to treasure weir. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, dingjiao Town, which rose in the Southern Song Dynasty, gradually declined due to the depletion of river channels and the only waterway access to Baoyan. Baoyan became one of the eight market towns in Dantu District. On April 23, 1949, Baoyan was liberated and Baoyan District People's government and Baoyan Town People's government were established. Baoyan town is the seat of the district and Town People's government. In June of the same year, Baoyan town was merged into Baoyan district and changed into a district town. In August 1957, the people's Committee of Baoyan township was established and was stationed in Baoyan town. In July 1958, the county and city merged; on September 26, the Baoyan people's commune of Zhenjiang city was established, with its office in Baoyan town. In April 1959, Baoyan people's commune was divided into three communes: Baoyan, Rongbing and Panrong. In May 1962, Baoyan people's commune was still under the jurisdiction of Dantu County. In April 1963, Baoyan district government was set up. In May 1969, Baoyan people's commune Revolutionary Committee of Dantu County was established. In April 1981, the Revolutionary Committee of Baoyan people's commune was changed into the Management Committee of Baoyan people's commune. In July 1983, the reform of rural system was carried out. Baoyan Township People's government and Baoyan commune Economic Joint Committee were established respectively. In April 1987, the township was transformed into a town and the people's Government of Baoyan town was established.
