Idioms and allusions
According to the biography of Jia Yi in the book of Han Dynasty, when Jia Yi was the crown prince of Liang Huai (the official who counselled the crown prince), he wrote a memorial to Emperor Wen of Han Dynasty, which was called "public order policy": "therefore, Hu Hai ascended the throne today and shot in tomorrow. Those who are loyal to remonstrance call it slander, and those who are deeply scheming call it evil words. They regard murder as AI (mowing) Cao Kan ran." In this memorial, Jia Yi discusses the historical lessons of Qin Dynasty which led to the death of Qin II due to the implementation of severe punishment and laws. Jia Yi was a famous scholar in the time of Emperor Wen of Han Dynasty. He was called as a doctor by Emperor Wen and served as the Taifu of Liu Yi, king of Liang Dynasty. Jia Yi made a comment on this. He said: "it's important to coach the prince and teach him how to read, but what's more important is to teach him how to be an upright man. If, as Zhao Gao taught Hu Hai, the second emperor of Qin Dynasty in the last years of the Qin Dynasty, what he taught Hu Hai was severe punishment and cruel prison, and what he learned was either to kill his head and cut his nose, or to copy all over his family. Therefore, as soon as Hu Hai became emperor, he would kill people indiscriminately. He would treat killing people as if he were mowing grass Later, Jia Yi took office as Taifu in the state of Liang, and he tutored the king of Liang. However, King Liang Huai accidentally fell to death on horseback. Jia Yi felt that he had not done his duty, so he was depressed all day. More than a year later, he died at the age of 33. However, Jia Yi's wonderful exposition has been handed down. As an idiom, "Cao Kan Ren Ming" is also used to describe the ferocity of the reactionary ruling class.
