The year of birth and death is unknown. Song Shenzong Xining six years (1073) kuchou section champion. In the fifth year of Xining (1072), Yu Zhong and his elder brother Yu Guan went to the ceremony examination together. Yu Zhong was in high school, but Yu Guan failed. Yu Zhong once said that he knew Huzhou, moved to Hangzhou, became an official and died at home.

Yu Zhong asked to depose himself to record his elder brother, which was not allowed by the imperial court, but he appreciated and praised Yu Zhong's practice. In the second year, Yu Zhongting paid tribute to the first emperor, Shangshu begging for banquets in qionglin.

After Yu Zhong became an official, he was a judge of Dali and a Shaoqing of Taichang temple. Yu Zhong supported the political reform, and Wang Anshi was forced to resign. He asked Yu Zhong to accompany him. He knew Jiangning mansion, and zhe Zong ascended the throne. He became the Secretary of the provincial government. He moved to Zuo Lang, Shao Shengchu (1095), and was sent to Liao state. Later, he said that Heshuo city needed to be repaired and strengthened in case of danger. During the period of xuanjing (1119-1127), the Jin soldiers drove straight into Heshuo City, which was difficult to defend. The government and the public began to accept their foresight. Yu Zhong once said that he knew Huzhou, moved to Hangzhou, became an official and died at home.
