Zeng Xingzong, known as Guangzu, was born in Ningdu county. In the fifth year of Qingyuan (1199) of the Southern Song Dynasty, he was awarded the title of "Tui Guan" in Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province.
When he was young, he devoted himself to Neo Confucianism and studied with Zhu Xi. He once praised him as "pure and honest, self-conscious and diligent". In the early years of Qing Yuan Dynasty, Zhu Xi was banned from pseudo learning. He was relegated because he committed a crime. Xingzong was once involved in Teaching Zhu Xi. After losing his official position and returning to Ningdu, he built his house in Yundang Valley, west of Jinjing mountain, which is called "Shuizhu Seclusion", and practiced ancient rites. Xingzong lived in seclusion and wrote the collection of Wei'an essays
