One day in 1947, Zhou Ruchang, a student of the Department of western languages at Yanjing University, received a letter from his fourth brother Zhou Huchang, asking him to help check dunmin's book Maozhai Shichao. When he happened to read a dream of Red Mansions, a typeset edition of Yadong library, he saw Hu Shi's preface talking about duncheng's collection of four pines hall, but he could not see dunmin's Maozhai poetry notes, so he wanted his younger brother to pay attention to it in the capital and try to find it.
After receiving a letter from his elder brother, Zhou Ruchang rushed to the library of Yanjing University. Unexpectedly, this secret book that Hu Shi couldn't find could be found at once, and he found six poems directly related to Cao Xueqin.
After seeing the "Maozhai poetry note", Zhou Ruchang told his brother about it and wrote an article entitled "new presumption of the year of Cao Xueqin's birth and death - Cao Xueqin in Maozhai poetry note". Recommended by his teacher Gu Sui, this article was published in the book supplement of Tianjin Republic of China Daily on December 5, 1947. Zhao Wanli presided over the supplement at that time.
After the article was published, Hu Shi saw it. He took the initiative to write to Zhou Ruchang to encourage him. Zhou Ruchang was greatly inspired by this, so he began to communicate with Hu Shi and began to write a special book on Redology. Since then, Zhou Ruchang embarked on a new academic road.
Zhou Ruchang himself highly praised the discovery of Maozhai Shichao. He said in his book "infinite feelings in the Red Chamber -- Zhou Ruchang's autobiography": This marks a new start of Redology since 1921 (about 25 years), and also records a great progress of "Cao Xue". It is of great significance.
When Hu Shi examined a dream of Red Mansions, he asked Mr. Lu Zhiwei if Deng Zhicheng had the book. Because Mr. Deng Zhicheng had always hated Hu Shi, he knew that the manuscript was collected in the library of Yanjing University, but he didn't tell Hu Shi. Therefore, Hu Shi has never seen the poem notes. It was discovered by Mr. Zhou Ruchang from the library of Yanjing University in 1947.
Around 1948, a batch of ancient books such as Mao Zhai Shi Chao were transported to Harvard Yanjing library.
