Xu Shi was willing to take risks and tried his best to plead for the innocent so that they would not be wronged. During the reign of Yongzheng, he exchanged the fields of his family located in the outskirts of the county with those of the Confucians who were far away from the county and often could not receive the rent of the fields, and donated the gardens, pools and shops to the Confucians for rent. In 1741, Qian Long and his brother Xu Shibo (Jiansheng) donated 1300 liang of silver to build Confucianism in the county. After returning to his hometown, he advocated the construction of Suichuan academy and the promotion of the association of sages to support the scholars who participated in the local examination and the joint examination, and donated 200 mu of land.
