Zhang Rong was born in November 1932 in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province. In 1950, he was admitted to Tangshan Institute of technology of China Jiaotong University (Tangshan Jiaotong University, now Southwest Jiaotong University) to study mining. In August 1952, the Department of mining of Tangyuan was transferred to Beijing University of mining and Technology (now China University of mining and Technology). Zhang Rongzeng also went with him. He graduated in 1953 and stayed in school to work.

Professor Zhang Rongzeng has many creative ideas and works on jigging theory, mathematical model of jigging process, jigging test technology and jigging design. In the early 1970s, the oscillographic testing technology of flow pulsation and bed porosity of jigs was developed, which was in the leading position in the world at that time. In the development of large jigs, seven research reports on the design of jigs are put forward. These research results provide the basis for the design of new series jigs.
