Zhang Benzheng

Zhang Benzheng, born in December 1940 in Dashiqiao City, Yingkou City, Liaoning Province, is an undergraduate, researcher and President of Tsinghua Ziguang group. He graduated from Tsinghua University in 1965 and worked in Tsinghua University. He has been engaged in scientific research and government affairs. In 1988, he was appointed to participate in the establishment of the company. In 1991, he served as general manager and President and was promoted to researcher in 1994.

Life experience

Zhang Benzheng was admitted to the Department of Engineering Physics of Tsinghua University in 1959. He graduated in 1965 and won the excellent student certificate of Tsinghua University. After graduation, he stayed in the University and has been engaged in scientific research and management. From 1983 to 1984, he worked as a visiting scholar in BHL for one year. In 1986, he studied in Stuttgart University for three months. He was promoted to associate researcher in 1988 and researcher in December 1994. One summer in 1988, Zhang Benzheng, who was also the deputy director of the scientific research department, was asked to talk with Zhang Xiaowen, President of Tsinghua University. The headmaster wants him to go to a company run by the school. Zhang Benzheng, who is not tall, does not want to go. He thinks that the businessmen on TV are not doing their business and do not want to go. The headmaster said, "you Zhang Benzheng are younger than me. How can you be more conservative than me? It's high-tech, a new industry that gives you 24 hours to think about. " The next day, the headmaster asked Zhang what he was thinking about. Zhang said that he had thought about it. There were two sentences in total. The first sentence was "I obey the distribution" and the second sentence was "I still don't want to go.". The headmaster said, "I've heard the first sentence, and you can digest the second sentence yourself."

In this way, Zhang Benzheng, who was full of unwillingness, had to put down the airs and nobility of scholars and lead Ziguang (then called Tsinghua University Science and Technology Development Corporation) to fight in the business world which was regarded as "eating and drinking, full of unscrupulous businessmen and not doing business".

Zhang Benzheng, who was pushed into the sea, should be said to be relatively lucky. He has Tsinghua University behind him to provide technical support, and he doesn't have to sell his house and family property to raise the start-up funds, but this has virtually given him greater pressure. If it's just a little-known company, it can use tens of thousands of yuan of start-up capital to quietly make the cake bigger, and then it will become famous overnight, with all the achievements pouring in. Even if it fails, it's natural that it won't be criticized too much. But for purple light, too many expectations were given at the beginning, so only success, not failure.

At the beginning of the company's operation, how to position it has become a difficult problem. In 1984, the technology development company of Institute of technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (the predecessor of Lenovo) was established. Two years later, Peking University new technology company (the predecessor of founder of Peking University) officially settled in Zhongguancun. Just in 1988, the general office of the CPC Central Committee put forward the proposal to set up Zhongguancun High Tech experimental zone. In line with this spirit, Tsinghua University Science and Technology Development Corporation announced its establishment in July that year.

In the beginning, purple light was a bit like a department store.
