Zhang Shichang was an engineer of Zigong wireless power plant, a lecturer of Guilin Institute of Electronic Technology (now Guilin University of Electronic Science and Technology), and an associate professor and professor of Chengdu University of Electronic Science and technology. Visiting scientist, Department of mathematics, Imperial College, London, UK and Karlsruhe Research Center, Germany. Now he is the director, professor and doctoral supervisor of Physics Department of Southwest Jiaotong University. Member of China Democratic League.

(1) Basic research on physics of free electron laser and generation of coherent X-ray and infrared radiation by relativistic electron beam; (2) generation of millimeter wave, submillimeter wave and microwave radiation at MW level (about 106W) by free electron beam and their related oscillators and amplifiers; (3) electromagnetic theory and computer models (4) theoretical study of nonlinear dynamics. He has published more than 60 journal papers, more than 40 conference papers and 2 Monographs in his research field.

The theory of cyclotron dynamics and single event theory for the unified description of free? Electron maser are established innovatively; the quantitative relation theorem between spontaneous emission and stimulated emission in free? Electron maser is deduced for the first time; the new mechanism of angular bunching of electron beam caused by electron angular momentum effect in electrostatic centrifugal focusing system is discovered and demonstrated for the first time in the world; the suitable separation method is proposed The nonlinear computer simulation method for the efficiency of high order cyclotron maser is analyzed. A new method for improving the efficiency of free electron laser by using reverse guiding magnetic field is proposed and illustrated for the first time. The possibility and threshold condition of explosive instability of three wave interaction in free electron laser are demonstrated. The published works have been cited in more than 10 foreign journals and many domestic journals, such as physical review, Journal of Applied Physics, IEEE Journal of quantum electronics, etc. The book "Introduction to free electron laser" is the first monograph on free electron laser in China, which contributes to the development of free electron laser in China and the cultivation of high-tech talents.
