Graduated from Jiangyin normal school, studied in Shanghai Daxia University. In 1931, he went to Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou and became a monk by worshiping Zen master Kefei. His name was Chuan Jie and later changed to juzan. In the same year, he received a full commandment in Baohua mountain. After that, he studied Buddhism, had unique views on knowledge only and Zen, and mastered Russian, English and German. From 1937 to 1948, he served as a professor in Wuxi Guoxue college in Beiliu, Guangxi, as the president of Hangzhou Wulin college, and lectured in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi and Hong Kong. In 1938, he organized Nanyue Buddhist and Taoist Salvation Association and Buddhist Youth Service Group in Hunan Province to join the Anti Japanese and national salvation movement. In 1949, he went to Beijing to attend the first plenary session of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference and was successively elected as a member of the second, third and fourth CPPCC National Committee and a standing member of the sixth CPPCC National Committee. In 1950, he participated in the establishment of modern Buddhism society and served as editor in chief.
