Since the Northern Song Dynasty, Mencius' academic thoughts have been paid more and more attention in the intellectual circles and the imperial court. The emperor of the Northern Song Dynasty believed that Mencius' proposal of "the people are the most important, the country is the second, and the monarch is the least" related to the people's interests, which was also an important tool to maintain the rule and stabilize the society. With the attention of the feudal emperors, Mencius' thoughts were generally recognized by the academia and the public. After Mencius' thought was valued, Mencius' status gradually rose and his fame gradually expanded. After the rise of Mencius' fame, some people are concerned about who is the descendant of Mencius.

It is said that the first person who cared about the descendants of Mencius was Confucius, a local official in Shandong Province during the reign of emperor Renzong of Song Dynasty. After being the magistrate of Yanzhou, Confucius found Meng Ning, a descendant of Mencius, in Zoucheng, Shandong Province.

Mencius' hometown is in Zou County, Shandong Province, which belongs to Yanzhou Prefecture. Out of respect for Mencius, Kong Daofu sent officials to visit everywhere. In the fifth year of Jingyou's reign (1038 AD), the temple of five sages was established on the west side of the temple. Mencius and Xunzi in the spring and Autumn period and Warring States period, Yang Xiong in the Han Dynasty, Wang Tong in the Sui Dynasty and Han Yu in the Tang Dynasty are regarded as "five sages" and worshipped as statues. Kong Daofu himself wrote the article of Wu Xian Tang Ji. In this paper, Confucius fully affirmed Mencius' achievements.

After three years as the magistrate of Yanzhou, Kong Daofu returned to the capital and served as the censor Zhongcheng in the imperial court.
