Renjian, whose date of birth and death, common surname and origin are unknown, lived around the second half of the seventh century. He got the Dharma from Huian Zen master of Songshan Mountain and once lived in Fuxian Temple of Luoyang. Because of his unrestrained nature, he is called Tengteng monk. In the year of wanjian (695) of Tiance in Tang Dynasty, he was ordered by Empress Wu to answer questions in the imperial palace.
