brief account of the author's life
Lu Jie, Zi Sheng, was born in Fanyang (now Zhuozhou, Hebei Province). In the ninth year of Dazhong (855), he was awarded the title of Jixian school manager and served as the assistant envoy. In xiantongnian (860-873), he entered the imperial court and successively served as youshiyi and shiyushi in the palace. Later, he was transferred to be a doctor, magistrate of Chang'an County and governor of Zhengzhou. He was also called into the court to serve as a counsellor. In the first year of Qianfu (874), he was called up as a scholar of the Imperial Academy and was appointed as a scholar of Zhongshu. Later, he was promoted to minister of the Ministry of household affairs and bachelor Chengzhi. In the fourth year of Qianfu (877), he was appointed as the official of tongzhongshu. He was also promoted to be the Minister of the army and the grand Bachelor of hongwenguan.
In the fifth year of Qianfu (878), the Huangchao uprising broke through the southern part of Chu, the periphery of Jiangxi and the states of Qian, Ji, Rao and Xin. It conquered Fujian from the eastern part of Zhejiang, and then moved westward to Lingnan, conquered Guangzhou and killed the Jiedu envoy Li Yan. So it asked the imperial court to appoint him as Jiedu envoy. At first, Wang Xianzhi started an incident in Henan Province. Lu Jie recommended Song Wei, Qi Kerang, Zeng Gung and others who had the strategy of generals, and was appointed by the imperial court as envoys. When Song Wei killed Shang Junchang, the uprising army grew stronger. The imperial court appointed Wang Duo, the prime minister, as the governor. Lu Jie was very unhappy. Cui Yao, the governor of Zhejiang Province, and others wrote to the court, asking for an imperial edict to appoint Huang Chao to control the military and political affairs in Guangzhou. The emperor ordered the prime ministers to make an agreement. Lu Dai was dissatisfied with the appointment of Wang Duo as commander-in-chief, and wanted to enrage Huang Chao. He insisted that Huang Chao should not be allowed to control Guangzhou, but only to direct the government. Lu Dai argued with Prime Minister Zheng Dan and threw the inkstone to the ground. Therefore, the emperor removed both of them from the post of prime minister at the same time, and appointed Lu Jie as the guest division of the crown prince.
In the sixth year of Qianfu (879), gaopian General Zhang Lin defeated the rebellion several times. Lu Dai usually treats Gao Pian well and often recommends him as commander in chief. Because of Gao Pian's contribution, the emperor called Lu Dai to assist in political affairs. When Wang Duo lost his post and was dismissed, he was replaced by Gao pian. Therefore, to the east of Tongguan, Ru, Shan, Xu, Deng, Bian, Hua, Qing, gun and other states all changed their commanders. All the commanders appointed by Wang Duo and Zheng Dan were replaced. Lu Jie relied on Tian Lingzi inside the court and Gao Pian outside the court. The military and political power of the court depended on him. At that time, Lu was in a trance with rheumatism. Political decisions were made by Wen Jixiu, an official around him, and bribery prevailed for a time. When the uprising army invaded Huainan, Zhang Lin was killed, commander Xu Zhou was driven away, and the officers and soldiers of Juanshui were defeated. The imperial court was shocked and blamed Lu Qian. When the uprising army broke through Tongguan, Lu was dismissed from the prime minister's post again and served as a guest of the crown prince. He took poison and killed himself that night. He was 57 years old.
