Huang Rui
Huang Rui was born in 1952 in Beijing. Huang Rui is one of the most controversial artists in the history of Chinese contemporary art. In 1979, he launched the Star art exhibition, which opened up a precedent of Chinese contemporary art. He has always been committed to the responsibility of artists in society and the quality of avant-garde schools. The second star art exhibition was held in 1980. Huang Rui moved to Japan in 1984 and held the "ten years of stars" art exhibition in Hong Kong in 1989. "Star Art Exhibition" can be regarded as the beginning of Chinese contemporary art and the symbol of the independence of Chinese contemporary artists. Another actor with the same name is professor and magician of School of chemical engineering, Sichuan University, and star teacher of Central University for nationalities.

Huang Rui was born in Beijing in 1952. He is the organizer of the Star Painting Society in 1979 and one of the leaders of Chinese avant-garde art. He is also the first resident of Beijing 798 Dashanzi Art District and the initiator and planner of Dashanzi Art Festival. In the 1980s, his art was mainly painting. Since the 1990s, he has entered a comprehensive experimental period of art, involving in installation, performance art, photography, printmaking and other fields.
Huang Rui has lived in Japan for nearly ten years since 1984. Now he works and lives in Beijing.
In 2002, after Ai Weiwei's recommendation, he took a fancy to the environment and building of 798 factory, so he installed his home and studio in 798. In the same year, Japan's "Tokyo Gallery" was introduced to 798, where the "Tokyo Art Project" was launched. Later, efforts were made to introduce other artists to 798, which gradually transformed 798 from an abandoned factory into an art district.
In 2006, an open exhibition was held in Huang Rui studio, 798 Art District, Beijing. In addition to the exhibition of Huang Rui's studio's creative state, Huang Rui invited more than 20 artists, architects, scholars, critics and cultural representatives to participate in his performance art work "go to tea". In the process of drinking tea, we discussed the rise and fall of art district. At the invitation of China Academy of fine arts, he gave lectures on "Star Art Exhibition" and "the rise of 798".
