He owned thousands of volumes of books and built several bookstores, such as Daogu building, Hongyao mountain house, and xiaohulushan library. Most of the books were collected in the song and Yuan Dynasties and played with gold and stone. He often exchanged knowledge with Zhu YIZUN, Cha Shenxing and other scholars. He was interested in buying books. He heard that Zha Shenxing had a copy of Lu Zhuangyuan Tongjian, which was not easy to get. Later, Cha Shenxing buried his relatives and found that his family's land was a treasure land of geomantic omen. He was overjoyed to hear that and was willing to change the land for books. His wife, Zha Shuying, is the younger sister of poet Zha Shenxing. She has a lot of literary talent and is fond of the same hobby with him. Her husband and wife sing in harmony every day. The scale of collection is the same as that of Ni's "Qingmi Pavilion". Guan Tingfen commented in Haichang art and literature annals that Ma "lives in the Daogu building, which is the best collection of books in Southeast China.".

Main achievements

He has compiled one volume of daogulou collection bibliography with more than 600 kinds of descriptions. He has collected many famous paintings, such as Guo Zhongshu's spring ploughing, Li Gonglin's manwang hanle, Liu Songnian's spring mountain rain Ji, Xia GUI's Huashan waterfall, Huang Zijiu's Luanshan ancient wood, Wang Meng's mountain village, Zhao Mengfu's spring exile boat and Ni Zan's Jiangzhu snail. There are five volumes of the collection of calligraphy and painting in daogulou, collected from the Tang, song, yuan and Ming Dynasties. At the beginning of Yongzheng period, the collection of books and paintings belonged to Wu Qian. Wu's postscript says: "the collection has been compiled from the three dynasties up to the Ming Dynasty. The inscriptions and postscripts of all the gold and stone tablets and even the famous paintings in the legal books are not selected.". There are a lot of book seals, mainly including "Huashan Mazhong's rare book", "ancient yanguanzhou Ma Nanlou Book seal", "Fufeng Book Yinsheng", "Huashan zhongzi's private seal", "ancient yanguanzhou maszan's seal", etc. He is good at painting, painting insects, fish, birds, animals, mountains and rivers, plants, and printing. He wrote Yan Zhai Yin Pu, which was written by Zhu YIZUN.
