Tian Yu, whose name is Zizhong, was born in Shouan (today's Yiyang). His birth and death are unknown. During the Qingli period of the Northern Song Dynasty, Jinshi successively served as the military officer of Yuanzhou (now Yichun, Jiangxi), Yingzhou (now Wuchang, Guangdong) and Hezhou (now Haikang, Guangdong). He was also the magistrate of Dali temple, Mengzhou and Jiangzhou (now Jiujiang, Jiangxi). Because of his good governance, he promoted the Secretary of state, granted the official wailang, and took charge of the prison of Guangdong and Guangxi.

In the fourth year of Qingli (1044), ouxifan rebelled, and Tian Yu led his troops to fight against it. Renzong knew that Tian Yu was familiar with the affairs of the south, and he was promoted to the transport envoy of Jinghu North Road, which made Tian Yu manage the two counties and counties, store grain for war, and stabilize the south. Later, the Longshan dyke (now Wanzai in Jiangxi Province) burst, and Tian Yu led the people to control the water and reinforce the dyke, so that the lives and property in this area could be saved. Because of Tian Yu's meritorious service to the army and the people, he was promoted to the Bachelor of LongTuge, and changed to the magistrate of Qingzhou and Tanzhou (both in Shaanxi). Tian Yu was diligent in his political work, simple in his administration, and spared no effort in dealing with affairs. He often set a good example for the people with his physical strength, which was quite praised by the people.
