Life of the characters
Early experience
Wang was born in xiushili, Xingru Township, Yidu County, Qingzhou (now Zhengmu Town, Qingzhou City, Shandong Province) on November 25, 978, the third year of Taiping rejuvenation of the state. His ancestor was Wang family of Taiyuan. He took refuge in Yidu of Qingzhou at the end of Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasties, so he settled here.
Wang Zeng was an orphan at the age of eight and was brought up by his uncle Wang Zongyuan. He was quick witted and diligent since his childhood. He once worshipped Zhang Zhen in Tongli as his teacher. Since then, he has been good at writing poems.
The number one scholar becomes an official
In the fifth year of Xianping (1002), Wang zengzhong won the first place in the palace examination. Before that, he also won the first place in the fajie examination and the provincial examination, so he became a man of "Lianzhong Sanyuan". At that time, Yang Yi, a famous litterateur, praised Wang Zeng's Fu and said, "this is the talent to assist the emperor." After the Jindian biography, Wang was awarded the title of governor and reported to his uncle Wang Zongyuan. In his letter, he wrote: "in front of today's hall, he was the first to sing his name. This is the virtue accumulated by his ancestors. Adults need not be overjoyed." Later, he was promoted to general judge of Jeju. After being recalled to Beijing, Kouzhun, the prime minister, was very surprised at Wang Zeng. He specially asked him to take an examination in the political affairs hall. Later, he was appointed secretary of the provincial government Zhuolang, magistrate of zhishiguan, and judge of Sansi Hubu.
In the first year of Jingde (1004), after the "alliance of Chanyuan" was signed, special envoys were sent between Song Dynasty and Liao Dynasty to ask questions. In the national documents, Liao Dynasty was called the Northern Dynasty, while Song Dynasty called itself the Southern Dynasty. Wang once thought: "it is enough to call Khitan the national name." Because the emissary has set out, there is no change in the end.
Later, he was promoted to youzhengyan, zhizhigao and the historian's office. At that time, auspicious signs appeared everywhere. When Wang entered the court, Zhenzong talked about it to him. Wang Zeng advised Zhenzong not to be arrogant in taking credit. When Zhenzong began to "offer sacrifices to the west" and build a jade palace, his subordinates did not dare to admonish him, but Wang Zeng played five evils to admonish him. The previous appointment of doctor was sentenced to Dali temple. Zhenzong wanted to re-use this official system and specially appointed Wang Zeng to this position. And said to Wang Zeng: "prison, is an important system of the country, now you will be wronged by this position." Wang Zeng kowtowed his thanks. He asked himself to recruit staff as a rule. He was promoted to Hanlin bachelor. Zhenzong once sat in Chengming hall in the evening and summoned the king to deal with it for a long time. After retiring from the court, the inner servant of Zhenzong sect told Wang Zeng, "I really want to see you, so I don't have time to see you in court clothes. Please don't think I'm waiting for you."
Wang was later in charge of the trial court. In the past, he was sentenced to serve two years for violation of the system of letters, whether intentionally or negligently. Wang once requested that only those who accepted the emperor's personal edict should be sentenced. Before long, those who violated the system were punished for their negligence. Zhenzong said: "according to what you said, so that there is no violation of the book making people." Wang once said: "how can everyone know the imperial edict of the emperor because the world is so big? As your majesty said, there are no more people who commit the crime of negligence." Zhenzong understood and finally followed Wang Zeng's advice.
The pilgrimage phase
In 1011, Wang was promoted to the position of master and guest doctor of Shangshu. Later, he learned about the court of examiners, the court of Yintai and the court of goudangsanban. In September of 1016, Dazhong Xiangfu took the right Jianyi doctor as his official.
In September of the first year of Tianxi (1017), Wang qinruo, the prime minister, dismissed him as the Minister of rites and the Minister of justice. The next year, he left Beijing to know yingtianfu (now Shangqiu south, Henan Province). There was a folk rumor that there was a demon floating around like a flying hat and catching people at night. From the south of the capital, people were afraid of it. Wang once ordered to open the inner door at night. If anyone dares to say that the demons will be arrested immediately, there will be no demons in the end. Later, he transferred the Tianxiong Army (now in the northwest of Daming, Hebei Province), and in August of the fourth year of Tianxi (1020), he returned to be a political adviser and moved to be a minister of the Ministry of government and a guest of the crown prince.
In the first year of Qianxing (1022), Emperor Zhenzong was seriously ill, and empress Liu took charge of the government. Although Prince Zhao Zhen (later song Renzong) attended the Zishan hall, everything was decided by Empress Liu, and both inside and outside the court were worried about it. Wang Zeng quietly made a speech to Qi Qianwei: "the crown prince is young. If he is not the queen, he can't legislate. Prince Gayne, then the prince is stable; the prince is stable, that is to say, the Liu family is stable. " Qian Weiyan thought Wang Zeng was right, so he told empress Liu about it.
After the death of emperor Zhenzong, Wang Zeng was ordered to enter the palace to draft the imperial edict, which said: "the empress of Ming Su is the assistant of the crown prince, and he has the right to listen to military and state affairs." Prime Minister Ding asked him to remove the word "Quan". Wang Zeng refused, insisting that empress dowager Liu could only act as an agent of state affairs.
After Renzong ascended the throne, Wang was promoted to minister of rites. The ministers talked about the ceremony of the Empress Dowager's going to court. Wang once asked that according to the old rules of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Empress Dowager should sit on the right side of Renzong and play with a curtain. Ding said that he wanted Renzong to receive ministers only on the first and the fifteenth day of each month. The Empress Dowager summoned the assistant ministers to determine the major events. If it was not a major event, he would be sent to the internal detention class, and Lei Yungong would pass on the ban. The decision could be made by Lei Yungong. Wang Zeng objected, but Ding said he would not listen. Before long, Lei Yungong committed a crime and was killed, and Ding Wei was also convicted. From then on, the curtain of the two palaces was hung, and the assistant ministers were all in accordance with Wang Zeng's suggestion.
When Ding Wei's crime began to come to light, Ren Zhongzheng said, "Ding Wei was cared and protected by the emperor. Although he is guilty, please consider his merits when he is convicted according to the criminal law." Wang once said, "what else can we discuss about Ding's accusation that he was guilty of unfaithfulness in the ancestral temple?" At this time, Zhenzong had just died, and there was a lot of controversy and confusion inside and outside the court. Wang Zeng had a serious face and a solemn manner. The court relied on him as an important minister. In July, he was awarded the title of minister of Zhongshu, who also held the original post. At the same time, he paid homage to pingzhangshi, the Grand Master of Jixian hall, and huilingguan envoy.
In 1025, Wang qinruo died. In July, Wang Zeng served as a minister of the Ministry of household affairs, a Bachelor of Zhaowen school, a supervisor of national history, and a palace envoy of yuqingzhao. Wang once thought that Renzong should be close to the Confucians and take them as teachers when he ascended the throne, so he called Sun Xun and Feng Yuan to give lectures in Chongzheng Hall.
In the summer of 1026, it rained heavily. It is said that the Bianhe river will burst and there will be a flood. The people in the capital are very afraid and plan to flee to the East. Renzong asked Wang Zeng for his opinion. Wang Zeng said, "the memorial to the breach of the Yellow River has not come. It's just a popular demagogue. It's not worth worrying about." After that, the result was as Wang Zeng expected. The Shanxi transshipment envoy set up vinegar business and carried out monopoly to make profits. He also asked to extend this method to the whole country, and Wang once asked to abolish this law.
Wang was a strict and steady man. Every time he went to the pilgrimage to see Renzong and stated the gains and losses of things, he was very careful. Many people were recommended by him and promoted by the imperial court. He especially hated those who were lucky to be favored. Renzong asked Wang Zeng, "when the officials are right, many of them want to get a job." Wang once said, "as long as your majesty suppresses speculation and advocates tranquility, there will be people who are difficult to be promoted but easy to be demoted." Cao, the minister, was jealous that Wang Zeng's official rank was higher than him. Renzong ordered Cao to be superior to Wang Zeng, which was criticized by public opinion. Later, Wang Zeng was promoted again. When the ceremony was held, Cao Liyong still wanted to put himself above Wang Zeng, and the court did not dare to rule. Renzong and the Empress Dowager sat in the Chengming hall for a long time and ordered them to come to the court in the order of rank. The court was terrified and at a loss. Wang Zeng looked at the court and said, "just report that the Prime Minister Wang Zeng was waiting to thank you." After the order was set, Cao Li was indignant. When Cao Liyong committed a crime, the Empress Dowager was so angry that Wang Zeng defended Cao Liyong instead. The Empress Dowager said, "Ai Qing used to say that Cao used to be rude. Now why do you want to defend him?" Wang once said: "Cao Liyong has always relied on the emperor's kindness. Therefore, his subordinates once refuted him with reason. Now Cao Liyong is called a great evil, and his subordinates don't know." The Empress Dowager was a little angry, and finally she took Cao Liyong lightly.
At first, when the Empress Dowager was canonized, she would drive the Da'an hall. Wang once firmly opposed it. When he congratulated the Empress Dowager on the Changning Festival, he only held a respectful celebration in the biandian hall. The family of the Empress Dowager's in laws asked Wang Zeng to report to see her. Wang Zeng often punished and suppressed her, which made her even more unhappy. In the seventh year of Tiansheng (1029), a fire broke out in yuqingzhao palace. Empress dowager Liu demoted Wang Zeng to Qingzhou. In the ninth year of Tiansheng (1031), the Zhangde army's festival envoys knew the Tianxiong army again, and the Khitan envoys came and went here. They all restrained themselves and did not dare to make noise. The people praised his achievements, made portraits for him and set up ancestral halls to commemorate him.
In 1033, Empress Dowager Liu collapsed and was in charge of Renzong. She worshipped Wang Zengwei, who was the official of tongzhongshu, and sentenced to Henan mansion (now Luoyang, Henan).
In August of the first year of Jingyou (1034), he was a privy envoy and Minister of the Ministry of officials.
In the second year of Jingyou (1035), he paid homage to youpushe, his servant, and pingzhangshi. He was a Bachelor of Jixian hall and was granted the title of Duke of Yi.
At first, Lu Yijian, a political adviser, was very respectful to Wang Zeng, who also strongly recommended him as prime minister. When Lu Yi Chien was above Wang Zeng, he was often arbitrary, and Wang Zeng could not bear it
