It was amazing that life was sometimes so wonderful.
On October 8, Yang Fen, who had just finished the women's table tennis world cup as an African champion, was interviewed by reporters on the third day of her return to Wuhan, telling her story of her hard and magical journey of table tennis.
The road of table tennis is full of twists and turns
Yang Fen was born in 1982 and lives in Guocikou, Hanyang. At the age of 6, Yang Fen, who was still a freshman in Erqiao primary school, was accidentally taken in by the school's table tennis coach. "I've been very tall since I was a child. I always sit in the last row in class. Maybe I think my physical condition is good and suitable for sports, so the coach chose me." Yang Fen, who is 1.70 meters tall, is absolutely "tall" among the girls. With her slim figure and beautiful face, Yang Fen has nothing to do with the athletes in appearance. Instead, she looks like an eye-catching modern girl on the runway. However, behind Yang Fen's beautiful figure, it is a road full of frustrations.
Since she started playing in 1988, Yang Fen has had to transfer to other schools for various reasons. She has left small footprints in the ping-pong halls of shandongmen, Yanma lane and Xinhua Road. In 1993, 11 year old Yang Fen was favored by the table tennis team of Wuhan Institute of physical education. In the same year, she joined the team and ended her wandering journey of table tennis enlightenment. After two years of hard training in the Institute of physical education, Yang Fen chose to join the Shanghai Pudong club team in 1995, and then began her wandering in a foreign land. "When I was a child, I never yelled bitterness and tiredness. Many people thought this road was difficult. I also knew that there were so many people playing table tennis in China, and there were only a few world champions. I didn't have too many strict requirements on myself, as long as I like it. "Despite years of hard work, Yang Fen didn't make it to the top in the end, but it is this kind of life practice that makes Yang Fen more optimistic and stronger.
In 1999, Yang Fen bid farewell to her professional table tennis career and returned to Wuhan to study in China University of Geosciences. In the University table tennis team, Yang Fen is the absolute main force, she represented the University of Geosciences to participate in two National University Games, and achieved good results. In 2004, Yang Fen graduated from university and joined Wuhan Water Affairs Group. The water affairs group, which has always attached great importance to table tennis, has a table tennis team with many provincial teams and even national team experts. Therefore, Yang Fen has been able to continue her relationship with table tennis. Despite this, after taking part in the work, Yang Fen has been unable to spend all her energy on table tennis, and she began to gradually alienate from her favorite sport. However, at this time, a sudden invitation changed Yang Fen's fate again.

After a brief consideration and with the support of the leaders of the water group, Yang Fen readily accepted it. In this way, Yang Fen began a further and more magical journey in a foreign land.
Congo (Brazzaville) is located in South Africa. Because it used to be the colony of France, this small country with a population of only 3 million takes French as the subject. Congo (Brazzaville) and the war-torn Congo (Zimbabwe) are only adjacent to a river. Yang Fen said that when she went to bed at night, she could often hear gunshots from neighboring countries. Years of war and natural disasters have made most African countries very poor, and Congo (Brazzaville) is no exception. Talking about her life experience in Congo, Yang Fen described her feelings in one word: bitter!
"Even in the capital, Brazzaville, it's common to cut off water and electricity," she said. During the day, there is basically no water. At night, even if there is water, there is no hot water. Africans are used to hot days and like to flush cold water. But I can't get used to it, so I have to take a bath with hot water. "
There is no guarantee of basic life, let alone extravagant talk about entertainment life. Yang Fen said that in her first year, she was extremely bored at night. Because of the language barrier, she was unable to communicate with the local people. Every day, she had to shut herself up in her room to read, learn French, or read the DVD she brought with her.
The living standard is not high, which is totally tolerable for Yang Fen who has suffered a lot. However, Yang Fen suffered a lot from the disease caused by the disobedience of soil and water.
Yang Fen told reporters that many diseases are prevalent in the African continent, so the Chinese government requires every person going abroad to receive three doses of vaccine before going out to prevent diseases. But even so, Yang Fen did not escape the disaster. "Not long after I went there, I was bitten by a mosquito, leaving a big scar," Yang Fen said. She picked up her trouser legs and showed the reporter that although it had been two years, the scar on her calf was still clearly visible. "Not a day later, I was all over the place and began to have a fever. Once checked, I suffered from malaria." Malaria is a very common disease in Africa. Its severity can be large or small. If it is not treated in time, it may even lose its life. Fortunately, after emergency treatment, Yang Fen's condition was soon under control. But what Yang Fen didn't expect was that she contracted the disease three times during her life in Africa. "It's so painful. It's a kind of torture."
The difficult life in Africa did not defeat the strong Yang Fen. Once she stepped onto the stage of table tennis, all her unhappiness would be swept away. Yang Fen is a table tennis star in the eyes of the people of Congo.
In 2006, after a year of coaching the Congo team, Yang Fen changed her identity into an athlete and coach at the repeated request of the other team. So far, Yang Fen became the first Chinese player to join the Congo table tennis team and began to play on behalf of the Congo team. In the same year's Africa international invitational tournament, Yang Fen won the women's singles championship at the beginning of her life, but this is only the beginning.
In March 2007, Yang Fen won the women's singles championship in the African Championship, which is also the first intercontinental gold medal in the history of the Congo table tennis team.
