Life of the characters
Early experience
Du Zhenglun, together with his elder brothers Du Zhengxuan and Du zhengzang, was selected as a scholar in Renshou period of Sui Dynasty. He was good at writing articles and was proficient in Buddhist scriptures. Later, he was awarded the title of Yu Qi Wei. In the Sui Dynasty, there were only more than ten scholars, but the Du family had three scholars, so they were praised by the people at that time. During the Wude period of the Tang Dynasty, Du Zhenglun served as a recorder of the general manager's office of Qizhou and joined the army. Later, he was recruited by the king of Qin Li Shimin (later Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty) and entered the literature museum of the palace of the king of Qin.
Tired promotion
In the first year of Zhenguan (627), Wei Zheng, the Minister of Shang, recommended Du Zhenglun, saying that his talent was incomparable in ancient and modern times. Emperor Taizong then promoted Du Zhenglun to be a member of the Ministry of war, and said to him: "I asked the minister to recommend outstanding people, not because I prefer such people, but because they are good for the people. And I will never appoint those who are not good in character and ability. I'm appointing you now because of your loyalty and integrity. I hope you are competent. "
In the second year of Zhenguan (628), Du Zhenglun was transferred to Shizhong, who was responsible for recording the notes on daily life. Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty once said, "when I speak a word, I have to think whether it is beneficial to the people, so I dare not speak more." Du Zhenglun replied: "the words and deeds of the monarch should be recorded in historical books. My duty is to write notes on daily life, so I dare not be disloyal to my duty. If your Majesty's words violate the truth, it will not only damage the people today, but also damage the holy virtue even after a thousand years. I hope your majesty will be careful. " Emperor Taizong gave him 200 pieces of silk.
In 630, Du Zhenglun paid homage to the Minister of Zhongshu. In the sixth year of Zhenguan (632), Du Zhenglun, together with Wei Ting, the imperial historian, Yu Shinan, the Secretary, and Yao Silian, the author, went to the library. Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty hosted a banquet and said, "I found that when people and ministers of all dynasties met enlightened masters, they would try their best to persuade and admonish them. As for loyal ministers like Longfeng and Bigan, they were inevitably punished and killed. It is not easy to be a king, but more difficult to be a minister. Dragon has scales, so does monarch, but you dare to touch them. If I can always do this, I have no worries about danger! " And he gave them a great reward.
Before long, Du Zhenglun was appointed Prince Zuo Shuzi, a scholar of Chongxian school, and a regular official. Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty said: "the prince has been the foundation of the country since ancient times, and we must choose moral people to assist. Now the crown prince is young, and his ambition is still uncertain. If I can see him sooner or later, I can admonish and restrain him at any time. Now I let him supervise the country, but I can't leave him by my side. You are ambitious, broad-minded and can stick to the right path, so I can only let you leave me to assist the crown prince. You should know the weight of this appointment. "
He was relegated repeatedly
In the tenth year of Zhenguan (636), Du Zhenglun became the Minister of Zhongshu again. He was also the prince Zuo Shuzi and was granted the title of Marquis of Nanyang County. Taizong of Tang Dynasty once told Du Zhenglun: "it's just a small matter that my son suffers from foot disease, but he is fond of being intimate with villains, so that he doesn't have a good reputation. You should always admonish him. If he doesn't listen, come and tell me Later, Du Zhenglun advised the Prince Li Chengqian several times, but they were not accepted, so he told him what Taizong said. Li Chengqian pleaded. Emperor Taizong asked, "why did you tell the prince what I said?" Du Zhenglun replied, "I persuaded him, but he didn't accept it, so I used his Majesty's words to scare him, hoping that he would be afraid, and maybe he could change from evil to good." Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty was so angry that he released Du Zhenglun as governor of Guzhou and demoted him as governor of Jiaozhou.
In the 17th year of Zhenguan (643), Li Chengqian intended to rebel and was dismissed as a commoner. After investigation, Li Chengqian ordered Hou Junji to give money to Du Zhenglun. So Emperor Taizong exiled Du Zhenglun to Chou (in today's Vietnam). Later, Du Zhenglun served as governor of Yingzhou and governor of Shizhou.
As prime minister
In the first year of Xianqing (656), Du Zhenglun was awarded the title of the yellow gate servant and the Bachelor of Chongxian school. Later, he was promoted to the third rank of Tongzhong Shumen and became the prime minister.

He was also a guest of the crown prince and a Bachelor of Hongwen school, and was granted the title of Duke of Xiangyang County. He and Liu xiangdao once spared Emperor Gaozong of Tang Dynasty, and thought that the excessive number of officials was the malpractice of politics. Emperor Gaozong asked Du Zhenglun and Liu xiangdao to be responsible for streamlining the officials, but because of too much resistance, they ended up in vain.
Demoted to Hengzhou
In the third year of Xianqing (658), Zhongshu ordered Li Yifu to falsely accuse Du Zhenglun of forming a clique with Li Youyi. Emperor Gaozong of Tang Dynasty demoted Du Zhenglun to be the governor of Hengzhou, and cut off his fief. Before long, Du Zhenglun died of illness at the demotion center.
Main achievements
During the reign of Zhenguan, Du Zhenglun was selected as an assistant minister of the eastern palace by Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty to teach Prince Li Chengqian. He went in and out of the Taiji palace where the emperor was and the east palace where the prince was. He participated in secret activities and was famous for his ability. After taking the post of prime minister, Du Zhenglun went to Gaozong and proposed to simplify the entry officials.
Anecdotes and allusions
Du Zhenglun was born in the Du family of huanshui and had the same ancestor as the Du family of Jingzhao. He once asked to be associated with the Du family of Jingzhao, but he was rejected, so he held a grudge. The residence of Du family in Jingzhao is called Du Gu. It is said that it has a strong and developed atmosphere, so it has been a high gate for generations. After paying homage to the prime minister, Du Zhenglun suggested that the imperial court dig Dugu in the name of dredging the waterway, in order to destroy his geomantic omen. After Du Gu was chiseled, the river flowed like blood and stopped ten days later. From then on, southern du (Northern Du lived in Du Qu) was never recovered.
