Dongshan Island, also known as Ling Island, also known as Butterfly Island, is located in the southern coast of Fujian Province, China. It belongs to Dongshan County, Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province, and is the second largest island in Fujian Province. The seventh largest island in China, between Xiamen City and Shantou City, Guangdong Province, is located at the southern end of Xiamen, Zhangzhou and Quanzhou Southern Fujian Golden Triangle Economic Zone. It is adjacent to the Taiwan Strait in the East and Zhaoan Bay in the West. In the southeast, it is the intersection of famous Minnan fishing ground and eastern Guangdong fishing ground. In the 33rd year of Yingzheng (214 BC), king of Qin, Baiyue was pacified and Nanhai county was built, and Dongshan was incorporated into its territory.
In the sixth year of the Ding reign of the Han Dynasty (111 BC), Nanhai county was set up in Jieyang County, and Dongshan County was set up in Jieyang county.
In the ninth year of Yixi (413) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Yian county was built and Suian county was built.
Sui kaihuang 12 years (592), Suian County into Quanzhou (now Fuzhou) Longxi County, Dongshan with it.
In the second year of Tang Dynasty (686), Huaien County of Zhangzhou was built, and Dongshan was changed to be one. In the 29th year of Kaiyuan in Tang Dynasty (741), Huaien county was removed and merged into Zhangpu County. Dongshan belonged to Zhangpu County; the ownership of Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms remained unchanged from the Yuan Dynasty.
In 1387, Tongshan garrison was set up in Dongshan. In the ninth year of Jiajing (1530) of the Ming Dynasty, when an County was established, five of Dongshan were designated as the capital. In the 13th year of Yongzheng (1735) of the Qing Dynasty, the territory under the jurisdiction of Qianhu in Tongshan was also under the jurisdiction of Zhaoan County, and Dongshan ended the history of two genera.
On May 1, 1916, Dongshan County was established with Dongshan Island and its surrounding islands (the above islands were separated from Zhaoan County) and Gulei Peninsula (separated from Zhangpu County). The county government was set up in the first district (formerly Tongshan Suocheng, now Tongling town).
Dongshan Island was liberated in May 1950. In September 1952, it was transferred from Zhao'an county to Dadao. In November 1955, the Gulei peninsula was transferred to Zhangpu County. In 1956, the county seat was moved to Xipu.
On September 16, 1958, Dongshan County People's commune was established and divided into five people's communes: Chengguan, Xipu, Kangmei, Xingchen and Chencheng.
In October 1984, the people's commune was abolished and the township (town) and village system was implemented. It is divided into two towns of Xipu and Chengguan, and five townships of Kangmei, Zhangtang, Xingchen, qianlou and Chencheng. On December 29, 1989, two townships of Xingchen and Chencheng were changed into towns.
In 1990, Dongshan had jurisdiction over four towns and three townships.
In 2014, the Bachimen seawall project was officially launched in Dongshan County. The Bachimen seawall was completed in 1961, with a total length of 620 meters and a width of 13.6 meters, connecting Dongshan Island and the mainland. After the removal of the seawall, Dongshan Island changed from the peninsula back to the whole island.

(1) Upper Triassic Jurassic metamorphic rocks
It is widely distributed in the north, West and south of Dongshan Island, namely the West and south of jianzhai Xipu qinyingshan Yanya line and the north of Tongling Town, accounting for about two-thirds of the county area. The lithology is schist and granulated shallow grained rock, which can be divided into four lithologic sections
Dolomite quartz schist section: the upper part is dolomite quartz schist, dolomite schist, intercalated with more granulite, occasionally with graphite dolomite quartz schist. The middle part is biotite monzonitic granulite, intercalated with sillimanite monzonitic schist, monzonitic quartz schist and monzonitic shoshonite. The lower part is composed of sillimanite monzonite schist, monzonite quartz schist, graphite intercalated monzonite schist, biotite plagioclase granulite and quartzite. This member is often penetrated by granitic veins to form banded migmatite. It is mainly distributed in the area of Sufeng mountain.
(2) Volcanic rocks of Nanyuan formation of Upper Jurassic
1. The second member: gray rhyolitic tuff lava, rhyolite with tuff, sand shale, distributed in the large area.
2. The third member: dark gray quartz tuff lava, fusion tuff, sand mudstone. It is distributed in the north of Bachimen Houlin Xingchen Jiaotou Putou line.
(3) Quaternary eluvium
Red clay formed by weathering of metamorphic rocks, volcanic rocks and intrusive rocks. From the surface to the deep, it gradually transits to weathered rock and fresh bedrock. The thickness of red clay is generally 1-5m. It is mainly distributed in Bachimen, Xingchen, qianlou, Xipu, Wulong, Dongshen, Kangmei, Chenglong, Tongbo, Qinying, Donggu and Chencheng.
(4) Aeolian sand in the upper part of Quaternary upper Pleistocene
It is brick red medium fine sand, occasionally coarse sand and fine gravel, lacking bedding, good sorting, 3-8m thick, distributed in Dongshen, Tongling and Aojiao.
(5) Quaternary upper Pleistocene middle and lower members of the land sea transitional facies accumulation
Only small pieces are distributed in dingxikeng. The lithology is grayish yellow loam and black clay, and the bottom is medium coarse sand gravel. The thickness is less than 10 meters. Most of this layer is concealed.
(6) Quaternary upper Pleistocene marine deposit
Scattered in Xipu, piedmont, Malan and other places. The lithology is: the upper part is gray gravelly light sub clay with silty fine sand, the lower part is black clay, and the bottom is gravel layer. The thickness is less than 10 meters. Most of this layer is hidden underground.
(7) Quaternary Holocene alluvium and diluvium
It is distributed in the piedmont of Chencheng and other places in small pieces. It is composed of grayish yellow loam, clay and sand gravel. The thickness is 9.5m.
(8) Quaternary Holocene middle marine deposit
It is distributed in dazhukou, Baicheng, Dongshen, qianlou and Chenzhou
In the area of city and reef head. The upper part is thin clay or muddy clay, and the lower part is medium fine sand, with a thickness of 1-3m. Most of this layer is hidden underground.
(9) Quaternary Holocene upper marine deposit
It is distributed in Dagang, Xigang and Shuangdong salt field. The upper part is muddy sand or sub clay, gray silt or fine sand, containing shells; the lower part is gray muddy fine sand, occasionally containing gravel. The thickness is 5-8m.
(10) Quaternary Holocene upper aeolian deposit
It is distributed in Huwei, Shanzhi, linbian, Chishan, Baicheng and Qinying. It is composed of grayish white and grayish yellow silty fine sand. The thickness is 1-15m.
(11) Quaternary Holocene diluvium
It is distributed in some foothills and mixed with gravel and clay. The thickness is generally 1-5m.
