Datong school

It's at the west end of Shengli Road in Shaoxing City. It is also the first normal school in China to set up a special physical education subject. The site of the school was originally a Gongyuan in the Song Dynasty, but it was changed to Yucang in the Qing Dynasty. In 1905, Xu Xilin and Tao Chengzhang founded Datong school here. In the second half of February 1907, Qiu Jin took over the post of Supervisor (president) of Datong school. On July 6, 1907, the Anqing uprising failed and Xu Xilin was killed, involving Datong. On July 13, Shaoxing magistrate led the Qing army to surround Datong school. At that time, there were nearly ten people in the school. Qiu Jin was fearless in the face of danger and was finally arrested because she was outnumbered. The school faces south, with five rooms and three entrances, which is different from Shaoxing folk houses with three rooms and buildings. Only two years before and after running the school, Datong school trained a group of military talents, accumulated strength for the revolution of 1911, accelerated the process of the old democratic revolution, and set a precedent for China's normal education, physical education and women's cadre school. Datong school is the activity center of the restoration society and is listed as a cultural relic protection unit at the provincial level.

Founding process

Datong normal school, also known as Datong school, was founded by Xu Xilin and others in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province in 1905. The school only has Gymnastics Major. Datong normal school is a school for the revolutionaries to train the military backbone of the revolutionaries in the name of setting up gymnastics specialty. In Tao Chengzhang's a brief account of the Zhejiang case, he once pointed out very clearly: "those who have graduated from our school are controlled by the administrators of our school. The students of our school are "Friends of the Restoration Society". Therefore, "all the party members who come here only study military gymnastics and graduate in June. The diploma was issued by Shaoxing with the seal of Shaoxing Prefecture and Shanyin County, and the seal of Datong school at the end. On the back is the secret code. Mr. Fan Wenlan recalled in his article "female revolutionist Qiu Jin": Datong school is actually a military school, and the playground is just across from my home, separated by a small river. A group of children and I like to watch them carry foreign guns on their backs. When they hear the sound of foreign trumpets, they run to the river bank to have a look. Several times I saw a short man watching Gymnastics in the playground. Some people pointed out that it was Xu Xilin.

Introduction to Xu Xilin

Xu Xilin (1873-1907), born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, was a martyr of modern democratic revolution. He visited Japan in 1903 and took part in the restoration meeting in Shanghai in 1904. We should actively organize and contact mass revolutionary groups, prepare revolutionary armed forces, and engage in revolutionary activities. It was originally intended to establish Datong military preparation school, but the Qing government stipulated that the civilian military preparation school should not be set up. After discussing with Tao Chengzhang, a member of the revolutionary party, it was decided to establish Datong normal school, which gained legal status and officially opened on August 25, 1905. The reason why Datong normal school only set up gymnastics specialty is that they wanted to build a revolutionary military force capable of carrying out armed struggle through organized military sports training at the beginning. Therefore, in their report to the government, they obtained the qualification for running a school on the ground that "all those who want to study in gymnastics will go back to their hometown immediately after graduation in June, advocate League training and prepare for conscription".

School running process

The students of Datong normal school are mainly from some progressive youths in the society, as well as members of the society. The curriculum of Datong normal school mainly includes military gymnastics and apparatus gymnastics. According to Zhu zanqing's recollection in Datong normal school, there are three classes of military gymnastics every morning, except Sunday. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, there is a class of apparatus gymnastics, including overpass, sliding wood, platform, Trojan horse, swing, hoop, long jump, etc. In addition, courses include Chinese, English, Japanese, geography, history, education, ethics, physics and chemistry, arithmetic, natural history, music, pictures, etc.

Dissolution of school

On July 6, 1907, Xu Xilin assassinated Enming, governor of Anhui Province in Anqing. He led the student army to fail in the uprising and was arrested. He died the next day. Then Qiu Jin, who succeeded Xu Xilin in running Datong normal school, was arrested on July 14 and killed on July 15.
