Development history

Shanghai Arts and Crafts Museum, formerly the residence of the director of the French Concession industry board, was built in 1905.

After the victory of the Anti Japanese War, the World Health Organization of the United Nations once worked here, which was its first office in the Asia Pacific region.

In 1954, it was the office of the Sino Soviet friendship agency.

In 1960, Shanghai Institute of Arts and crafts moved in.

It was announced as a cultural relic protection unit in Shanghai in 1989. In 1963, under the concern of Comrade Chen Yi, the most outstanding folk arts and crafts artists in Shanghai successively worked and passed on their arts and crafts here. At the same time, they also established the arts and crafts exhibition room.

In 2001, under the guidance of the Municipal Cultural Administration Commission, the Shanghai Institute of Arts and crafts restored the building and set up a museum and professional creation room.

Former US President Reagan, British Prime Minister heath, boxer Ali and Egyptian President's wife all visited the site. The Institute of Arts and crafts has developed into a comprehensive cultural place with the functions of collection, exhibition, popularization, communication and tourism. The main building has three exhibition halls of folk arts and crafts, sculpture and embroidery, more than ten professional studios and more than 50 arts and crafts professionals.

For hundreds of years, Shanghai's arts and crafts have extensively absorbed the strengths of various regions and formed "Shanghai style" Arts and crafts with distinctive regional style with an open mind. At the beginning of the establishment of Shanghai Institute of Arts and crafts, the party and government paid attention to the traditional arts and crafts, and gathered a group of Shanghai folk art masters with unique skills, such as he Keming, Prince Gan of Shenjian, Liu Peizhen, Gao Wanyu, Zhang Meijun, Xu Baoqing, founder of Shanghai style boxwood carving, Xue foying, expert of fine carving, Yang Weiyi, master of porcelain carving, and inkstone carving Chen Duanyou, Zhang Jingan, etc. On January 15, 1964, chairman Zhu De wrote an inscription for the Shanghai Institute of Arts and crafts: "inherit and carry forward the fine traditions of Arts and crafts", further establishing the protection policy for traditional arts and crafts. It is under the implementation of this policy that the older generation of Arts and crafts masters left exquisite and elegant works, left a brilliant page for the motherland's arts and crafts career, and also left precious wealth for future generations. Many of these works have reached the peak of the profession, and so far no one can surpass them. Shanghai Arts and Crafts Museum and Shanghai Institute of Arts and crafts have a collection of such works for display for people to observe and study.
