Hengsha Island is an alluvial island at the mouth of the Yangtze River in China. It is adjacent to the East China Sea in the East, Changxing Island in the west, Chongming Island in the north and Pudong New Area in the southwest. The whole island is Hengsha Township, originally belonging to Chuansha county. In 1958, it was assigned to Baoshan county (now Baoshan District). In 2005, it was assigned to Chongming County together with Changxing Island. The island is formed by alluvial sediment from the Yangtze River. It is named because it lies across the Yangtze River Estuary. The sandbanks began to form in the Xianfeng Period of the Qing Dynasty (1851-1861), and began to be reclaimed in the 12th year of Guangxu (1886). It is triangular and covers an area of 49 square kilometers.
The terrain is flat and the rivers are crisscross. Agriculture is well developed, including freshwater aquaculture and marine fishing. With beautiful rural scenery, the island is planned to be a national tourist resort, and a small airport and river crossing tunnel will be built to connect with the urban area.
Yokohama
Hengsha Island is located at the easternmost end of the Yangtze River Estuary, south of Chongming Island, east of Changxing Island and north of Pudong New Area. Its area is the smallest of Chongming, Changxing and Hengsha islands, covering an area of 52 square kilometers.
Traffic information
The transportation from downtown Shanghai to Hengsha Island is very convenient. There are 8 passenger ships from Wusong Wharf in downtown Shanghai to Hengsha Island every day, and the round-trip ticket is 20 yuan. Shenchong line 7 can also go directly to Xinmin Town, Hengsha Island. In June 2007, Chongming Volkswagen, a subsidiary of Volkswagen Taxi, set up a fleet in Hengsha Island. The first batch of 17 taxis were stationed on the island for operation. Now there are three bus lines on the island.
The way to get on the island: bus No. 51, 116, B, 160, 508, 719, 728, 952, Baoshan No. 10, Baoshan No. 29. Get off at songbin Road Station of Metro Line 3 to Wusong wharf by ferry (Hengsha wharf is 38.9km away from Wusong wharf), or take Shenchong No. 7 bus at Wusong passenger station to Xinmin Town of Hengsha Island, take ferry to the island, or take self driving tour Ferry to the island. There is no bridge or tunnel planning at present.

After the Shanghai Municipal People's government reported to the State Council for approval, the administrative divisions of Changxing and Hengsha Township, which originally belonged to Baoshan District of Shanghai, were incorporated into Chongming County (now Chongming District) on May 18, 2005.
In order to develop the three islands of Chongming, Changxing and Hengsha in the Yangtze River Estuary, the Yangtze River Estuary crossing project composed of bridges and tunnels is planned to be constructed. It is envisaged that the East-West line and the west line cross sea project will be completed in 2010 as the coastal north-south transportation corridor, and the east line cross sea project will be completed. Geography and climate
Located in the Yangtze River Estuary in the southeast of Chongming District, it is adjacent to Changxing Island in the northwest, Chongming Island in the north and Pudong New Area in the southwest. Historical changes
Due to the siltation of the Yangtze River, Hengsha Island emerged from the sea in the light year of the Qing Dynasty. It was a sandbank in the middle of the river, covering an area of about 10000 mu, and located in the east of Chuansha hall in Songjiang River.
