Wuhan Zoo is located on the Bank of ink Lake in Hanyang City, Wuhan city. Its predecessor is Zhongshan Park Zoo in Wuhan City, which was built on the basis of the original nursery in Hanyang District. The existing land area is 42 hectares, and the water surface of Inner Lake is 26.7 hectares (Machang Lake). The whole garden is surrounded by lakes on three sides, forming a peninsula, with natural landscape of lakes, mountains, birds and flowers. The park is divided into front, middle and back districts. The front area is a land and water recreation area; the middle area is a wildlife exhibition area with garden landscape; the back area is to be developed and constructed, and a natural animal farm and logistics base are to be built. Wuhan Zoo is a comprehensive garden zoo which integrates the breeding and reproduction of wild animals, protection and research, shelter and rescue, animal science knowledge education, performance and entertainment. There are more than 20 animal buildings in five exhibition areas, including hundred birds paradise, crane Island, Swan Lake, medium-sized beast hall, giant panda hall and red panda hall. There are also veterinary hospital, breeding room, heating center and other logistics facilities. There are 80 scenic spots, such as Yingqu garden, huguangxuan, zhangshulin, jiukongqiao, Damen green square, and more than 20 recreational and catering facilities. Based on the ornamental animals, the park is characterized by the development of primates, especially the golden monkey population of Shenlongjia subspecies. At present, there are more than 200 species of rare animals, such as giant panda, golden monkey, white bear and Red Crowned Crane, with more than 2000 heads. With evergreen trees as the backbone and camphor, Taxodium, metasequoia and bamboo as the characteristics, there are more than 180 kinds of trees and flowers, nearly 80000 plants, and a large area of pure lawn and natural vegetation. The green coverage rate was 81.3%. In July 1987, Wuhan Zoo was included in the list of the eight zoos in China. In February 1982, the construction of Wuhan Zoo was listed in the sixth five year plan, which was one of the ten major events in Wuhan. In October 1984, the CPC Wuhan Municipal Committee and the municipal government mobilized more than 12500 officers and soldiers of the Wuhan air force and the staff of the city's garden system to carry out a massive military civilian joint construction of Wuhan Zoo. Wu Guanzheng, Wang Qun, Qian Yunlu and other leading comrades who were then in Wuhan and other relevant leaders of Wuhan participated in the voluntary labor of the construction of Wuhan Zoo. It took 100 days to complete 8 projects including road, dike, gate, parking lot and Huanhu road in qianqu and Zhongqu respectively. On February 20, 1985 (Spring Festival), Wuhan Zoo was officially opened to the outside world. According to the general plan at that time, it was open, constructed and perfected at the same time. The park has extensive contacts with domestic and foreign zoos. It has formed friendly zoos with dog Mountain Zoo in Japan, Cleveland zoo in Ohio, USA, and Duisburg zoo in Germany, and carried out a large number of animal exchange. In 1986, Cleveland zoo presented 8 animals of 4 species, including chimpanzee, ring tailed lemur, Macaw and raccoon; in 1990, 10 animals of 4 species, including Macaw, squirrel monkey, white headed cashmere monkey and yellow scarlet; in 1989, Duisburg zoo presented 1 pair of zebra, 1 hippo and 2 giraffes. These friendly envoys came to the park and settled down, which improved the quality of the animal exhibition in the park.
Wuhan Zoo
Wuhan Zoo is located on the Bank of Mo Mo Lake in Hanyang District of Wuhan city. Its predecessor is Zhongshan Park Zoo in Wuhan.
Covering an area of 680000 square meters, the zoo is characterized by golden monkeys and wetland birds in Shennongjia. There are giant pandas, red pandas, golden monkeys, African elephants, giraffes, flamingos, penguins, rhinoceros, hippos, kangaroos, zebras, cheetahs and other animals.
The zoo is China's youth science and technology education base, China's wildlife protection education base.
Evolution of construction
In 1975, Wuhan Zoo preparation office was established.
From 1975 to 1984, the new site of Wuhan Zoo was planned and developed. The state invested 1.8 million yuan and the construction area was 25.9 hectares. In the early stage, we carried out road, water and electricity infrastructure projects and landscaping; after 1977, we built animal houses and landscape attractions such as Luyuan, waterfowl lake, huguangxuan, medium-sized beast hall, Hedao, red panda hall, songpoting, and introduced golden monkey, red panda, South China tiger and other animals, with a total of 42 species and 320 animals.

It took 100 days to complete 8 projects including road, dike, gate square parking lot and Huanhu road in qianqu and Zhongqu respectively.
From 1984 to 1985, the state invested 6 million yuan (3.5 times of the previous eight years) to build the gate of the zoo, feed room, Shihu mountain, yuandongqiao, peach blossom forest, a variety of small commercial pavilions, more than 10 animal buildings, garden attractions and service facilities, breeding more than 500 animals, 11 500 rare flowers, planting more than 7400 trees and flowers, and 1200 square meters of lawn. All 317 animals of 50 species in Zhongshan Park were transferred to the park, and 4 Asian elephants were introduced. From March to July 1985, the zoo held an exhibition of golden monkeys at the world monkey center in Goushan City, Japan for the first time. On April 17 of the same year, the Municipal Bureau of landscape architecture approved the establishment of the Management Office of Wuhan Zoo and cancelled the preparatory office. In 1990, a total of 122 animals of 12 species were bred. At the end of the year, there were 110 species and more than 300 animals in stock.
On February 20, 1985 (Spring Festival), Wuhan Zoo was officially opened to the public
. According to the overall plan of the zoo, we should open, build and perfect the zoo at the same time. In 1991, the zoo built a hundred birds Park, in which there are 40 kinds of 3960 plants, 70 kinds of waterfowl, wading bird, songbird, bird, climbing bird and Raptor.
In 1999, with the determination of the first level government, Wuhan municipal government invested 8 million yuan for the zoo to transfer the water use right of Machang Lake (26.7 hectares) originally used for breeding in Hanyang fishing ground to the zoo, which was included in the scope of urban public green space. It creates conditions for the unity and harmony of aquatic wildlife exhibition and surface recreation.
On April 22, 2011, the wetland bird area of Wuhan Zoo was officially opened to the public.
Park layout
Wuhan Zoo is divided into three areas: front, middle and back. The front area is a land and water recreation area; the middle area is a wildlife exhibition area with garden landscape; the back area is to be developed and constructed with animal breeding ground and logistics base.
Wuhan Zoo is a comprehensive garden zoo integrating animals, scenery, plants, architecture and recreation. It is also a place for exhibition, publicity and research of wildlife and sightseeing. There are five exhibition areas, including bird Museum, crane Island Museum, medium-sized beast Museum, Panda Museum, hippopotamus Museum, golden monkey Museum, elephant Museum, Shihu mountain and deer garden, with an area of 24123 square meters. There are also veterinary hospital, feed room, thermal power center and other logistics facilities, covering an area of 7081 square meters. Wetland bird area
Located in the southeast corner of the park, the wetland bird area of Wuhan Zoo covers an area of 120000 square meters, displaying about 1400 rare birds of 60 species (excluding those who come to settle down in the wild). This is a paradise for birds, surrounded by clear water, verdant trees, stone pavilions and houses. The layout is exquisite. It is a wetland bird exhibition area with unique lakeside characteristics, which makes full use of natural resources and ingenuity.
