Panchi

Pan pool, also known as pan palace, is a half moon shaped pool in front of dachengmen, which means pan palace pool. It is the symbol of official school. In ancient times, "the princes were not allowed to see the four directions, so they lacked the learning of the half heavenly son from the east to the south, so they called pan palace."

Panchi generally has stone bridges, or arch or flat, or three three holes, or single multi hole, known as panchi. During the imperial examination, students cross the bridge to worship Confucius, which is called "entering pan".

According to the ancient rites, there is a school palace in the center of the prince's Imperial Academy, which is called "Biyong", surrounded by water. However, the school of the princes can only face the pan water in the south, so it is called "Pan Palace". Confucius was once granted the title of king of culture and propaganda, so he built "panchi" as his regulation. There are some sentences in the book of songs Pan Shui, such as "Si Le Pan Shui, Bo Cai Qi Qin", which means that scholars in ancient times could pick water Qin from Pan Chi and insert it on the edge of cap to show their literary talent. Some Confucius temples have stone inscriptions of "Si Le Pan Shui" embedded in the center of the brick wall beside the pool, which is derived from this allusion.

Panchi

Panchi is located at the south end of the central axis of Confucius Temple in Qinhuai District of Nanjing city. It is the only panchi in the world with natural river as the pool water. It is located in the core area of Qinhuai scenic belt of Confucius Temple and is the largest existing panchi in Nanjing. Panchi was built when kangxuefu was built in Song Dynasty, and then destroyed in the war. In the first year of Jingyou in the Northern Song Dynasty (1034), a temple was built there, which was called Wenxuan temple and later Confucius Temple. It was rebuilt in 1139.
