People's Square is the largest public square in Shanghai. It is transformed from the "largest horse racing hall in the Far East" in the concession era, which is equivalent to the big living room in Shanghai.
Municipal buildings, Shanghai Grand Theater, large underground buildings and so on are all gathered around, because it is a traffic transfer hub, very close to Nanjing East Road, so most of them will pass by.
People's Square is a place full of tourists. During the day, you can see fat pigeons, skateboard teenagers, kites, green spaces, and many fountains that create an urban atmosphere.
In addition, the people's Square is also a large business district. In the southeast, there are the strip store street and the dime shopping center.
Shanghai People's Square
Shanghai People's Square is located in Huangpu District of Shanghai. It is the political, economic, cultural, tourist center and transportation hub of Shanghai. It is also one of the most important landmark buildings in Shanghai. Formed after the opening of Shanghai as a port, it was originally known as Shanghai horse racing hall, where the upper class held horse racing and other activities at that time.
In a broad sense, people's Square is mainly composed of an open square, people's Park and some surrounding cultural, tourism and commercial buildings. Located in the center of Shanghai, the people's square has a total area of 140000 square meters. In the past, it used to be a place for people's processions and gatherings in the city, and can accommodate more than 1.2 million people. It is also the starting point of national highway 318.
People's Square, known as "city green lung", is located in the center of the city. It is a garden style square integrating finance, administration, culture, transportation and commerce. On the north side of the square is the seat of Shanghai Municipal People's government, on the northwest side is Shanghai Grand Theater, on the northeast side is Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, on the south side is Shanghai Museum, through which people's Avenue passes. There are 17 meters wide green belts on both sides of the square, with a total green area of 80000 square meters.
Under the situation of reform and opening up, it has become a historical necessity to transform the people's Square. The comprehensive reconstruction project of people's Square, which has been under construction for more than six years since the subway station was started in May 1988, shows a new look to the people of Shanghai on the eve of the 45th Anniversary of the national day. The transformed people's square has become a cross century political and cultural center of Shanghai integrating culture, greening and beautification.
The origin of the square
In November 1950, in order to unify the plane coordinate system of Shanghai, the then Shanghai Municipal Bureau of land affairs conducted a survey of the whole city. Based on the center flagpole on the roof of the international hotel, the plane coordinate system of Shanghai is determined. The international hotel is on Nanjing West Road to the north of people's Square. The 312 (Huhuo line), 318 (hunie line) and 320 (hurui line) national trunk highways (national highway) starting from Shanghai People's square all take people's Square as the starting point of "0" km, which is also the end point of 204 National Highway (Yanhu line).
Square changes
People's Square and people's Park were famous horse racing halls before liberation.
During the Opium War
In 1861, Hogg, the British director of the Horse Racing Association, colluded with the British Consul in Shanghai to ask Shanghai Daotai to set aside a circle of land as the running track. At that time, with the acquiescence of the local officials of the Qing Dynasty, he rode his horse and raised his whip. Starting from the gate of the first department store, he made a big circle to the West and south. Then he circled it according to the traces of the horse's hooves and forced 466 mu of farmland in the circle with low prices, forcing more than 30000 farmers to leave their homes and built the "Shanghai horse racing hall" known as "the first in the Far East".
Counter-Japanese War
It was used as a barracks of Japanese aggressors and a club of American troops during the war of liberation.
At the beginning of Liberation
The people's government took back the horse racing hall and gradually transformed it into people's Park, people's Square and people's Avenue. The horse racing hall building has been transformed into a library, and the grandstand has been transformed into a gymnasium. The former gambling den has become a place for Shanghai People's culture and entertainment.
1980s
With the needs of reform and opening up and urban development in Shanghai, the thorough transformation of people's square has been put on the agenda. At the end of 1993, the people's Square was comprehensively rebuilt and completed on October 1, 1994, the 45th Anniversary of the national day. The comprehensive reconstruction project of people's Square includes the main building, municipal supporting facilities and greening construction.
At present, there are seven main buildings, the municipal building on the north central axis and the Shanghai Grand Theater on the stand of the former sports palace. On the east side is the Urban Planning Museum. The northeast side of people's Square is the subway people's Square Station. To the south of Renmin Avenue, there are three large underground buildings in turn. To the southeast, there is a belt type underground mall. To the south, there is the largest urban underground substation in Asia. To the southwest, there is the largest underground parking garage in Shanghai. To the south of the central axis of the people's Square is the Shanghai Museum. The municipal supporting facilities of the people's square were first preserved and renovated. The granite pavement with a length of 600 meters and a width of 32 meters made the style of people's Avenue in the hearts of Shanghai people still exist.
On both sides of the avenue, a 5.5-meter-wide green isolation island and a 6.5-meter-wide non motorized lane are built, and colorful sidewalks are paved. Wusheng road has built the starting and ending stations for the original eight bus lines, outlining an arc-shaped "Moon Island". Wusheng road parking lot has become one of the distribution centers of tourist buses. The large-scale greening construction of the people's square has integrated it with the people's park with an area of 120000 square meters, and has become the two "green lungs" in the center of Shanghai, greatly improving the environment of the city center. The reconstructed people's Square records a new page in Shanghai's history and becomes a new urban landscape with a new image and style of Shanghai.
People's square has become a symbol of Shanghai's urban civilization with its new functions of administration, culture, ecology, transportation and commerce, as well as its solemn, open and bright image. In 1995, it was rated as one of the "top ten new landscapes of Shanghai in 1990s" and "top ten tourist attractions".
Multifunctional facilities
In the underground of people's Square, there are several huge municipal and commercial facilities.

People's Square subway station is the intersection and distribution center of Metro Line 1, line 2 and line 8. It is one of the most important underground transportation hubs in Shanghai.
Substation, garage
The underground substation of people's Square is one of the large-scale substations attracting worldwide attention, and it is also the first UHV, large capacity urban underground substation in China. Located in the southeast corner of people's Square, it is a 5-story reinforced concrete tube structure. The bottom depth is 18.6 meters, the inner diameter is 58 meters, and the building area is 9400 square meters. The main equipment is installed here. There is only a 300 square meter central control room on the ground. The final capacity of the substation is 720000 KVA and two 240000 KVA transformers are installed. The main equipment is imported from Austria, France, Germany and the United States, which has the domestic first-class level in technology. It receives 220 kV grid power and supplies 110 kV and 35 kV substations in Huangpu, Nansha, Luwan and Jing'an districts. The total investment of the project is 250 million yuan, which will improve the operation quality of the central power grid. At the same time, it also provides useful experience for the construction of underground substations in big cities in China.
The underground garage of the people's Square is located in the southwest of the square, with a total area of 50000 square meters and a depth of 11.15 meters. The upper floor is a shopping mall and the lower floor is a parking garage, also known as a sunken square. The garage is divided into seven areas, which can park 6000 vehicles at the same time. It is the largest underground garage in Asia. There are three hydraulic elevators in the site, and the personnel on board can take the elevators to the shopping mall on the upper floor. The whole parking lot will be equipped with world advanced automation equipment, such as automatic navigation management system, automatic sprinkler system, etc.
Underground Atlanta
People's Square underground mall is the largest underground commercial center in China, with a total area of more than 30000 square meters, including underground commercial street and underground shopping mall. It has two ground entrances and exits, two escalators and four escalators. From the lawn at the southeast end of people's Square, take the escalator down to the sunken square below 8 meters and walk into the underground commercial street. This is a long street 300 meters long and 36 meters wide. There are nearly 100 shops on both sides, each with an area of 50 square meters. All the shops use glass curtain walls, and the ground is made of "Indian red" and "Mongolian black" granite. Each shop is decorated elegantly. Some shops are decorated as warm rooms with small round tables, leisure chairs and sofas. Customers can sit down and buy them slowly. The store mainly deals in clothing, shoes, watches, glasses, photography, food, coffee shop, bank, supermarket, etc.
Famous products in Hong Kong
About 80% of them are overseas stores, especially famous stores in Hong Kong, so people call it Hong Kong famous street. The underground commercial street is connected with the underground shopping mall. The underground shopping mall is magnificent, just like an underground palace, covering an area of 25000 square meters. Among them is an underground Avenue 150 meters long and 12 meters wide, which divides the shopping mall into two parts. The first area on the left is the big department store, followed by the world famous clothing stores, leisure clothing stores and supermarkets. The first area on the right is the western fast food restaurant and wedding restaurant
