"Silk Road group sculpture" is a large-scale commemorative sculpture commissioned by Professor Ma gaihu, then director of the Sculpture Department of Xi'an Academy of fine arts, in 1984 to commemorate the 2100 anniversary of the Silk Road in 1987, which took three years to complete. In more than 20 years after its completion, it has become a landmark sculpture of the ancient city of Xi'an.

Sculpture content

The group sculptures on the Silk Road depict a caravan of camels trekking along the Silk Road, including Tang people and Persians. Among the 14 camels, there are two horses and three dogs The light brown granite stone is simple and elegant, and the carving lines are vigorous and smooth. Although it only depicts the images of three Chang'an people and three Persians, it is a continuous and integrated one, which highly summarizes the history of trade and trade between countries on the Silk Road for more than a thousand years, and shows the vast scene of a camel troop full of silk, porcelain, tea and so on. The meticulous expression of each character is highly condensed on the granite. From one end of the sculpture, the whole sculpture is like a majestic backbone, majestic, simple and thick stone, vigorous and powerful lines. When bathing in the afterglow of the setting sun, it is golden, just like a towering wind eroded castle on the vast desert, even more like the sand accumulated in the Gobi. The whole group of statues can be regarded as the best works of modern sculpture in China. Gazing at them is like reading the history of the Silk Road, which is awe inspiring.

The sculpture is made of local granite stone in Shaanxi Province, which is carved and assembled by more than 760 pieces of half cubic meters of stone, sharing more than 350 cubic meters of stone. In the composition design of group sculpture, the contour line of shaliang with strong rhythm and flow is emphasized, as well as the image characteristics of the ruins of the ancient city outside the Great Wall. In order to show the feeling of the camel team's long journey, I specially arranged the composition and emphasized a long word. According to the camel team's walking posture, I made a combination of density and ups and downs, strengthened the rhythm and movement changes of the camel team's outer contour, and gave people the ups and downs, continuous movement association and form aesthetic feeling.

Creative background

1987 is the 2100 anniversary of the founding of the silk road. In order to let people remember the arduous feats of the ancients to create the silk road. Since 1984, Ma gaihu, Professor of Sculpture Department of Xi'an Academy of fine arts, has been commissioned by Xi'an municipal government to design and create a large-scale commemorative sculpture "Silk Road group sculpture" for three years, which was enlarged and carved with granite, and finally completed in the wide green belt at the west end of Daqing road. This is because it used to be the famous site of kaiyuanmen in Chang'an City in Tang Dynasty, the real origin of the silk road. According to reports, the ancient Kaiyuan gate is connected with the "Anfu gate" of the Imperial City, and there is a road leading to the western regions in the west, which is the only way for Chang'an travelers and merchants from the western regions to go out of Yangguan in the West.
