history
The lake used to be supplied by Wanquan River. The area around Weiming lake was a part of Shuchun garden in Qing Dynasty. Qianlong gave the garden to his favorite Minister He Lu. There are 64 pavilions, 357 pavilions and thousands of houses built here, which is a luxury. After he was later seized, Shu Chun garden changed its owner. In the Qing Dynasty, it was a man-made lake in Shuchun garden, a garden affiliated to Yuanmingyuan. The stone boat was built according to the stone boat of the summer palace, but later the superstructure was burned down, and now only the stone base is left.
In the 1920s, it became a part of Yanjing University. The University asked designer Henry Murphy to plan the campus layout. The lake was named Weiming Lake by Qian Mu.
In 1952, Yanjing University was abolished and Peking University moved from the city center to the former site of Yanjing University. Since then, Weiming lake has become a part of the campus of Peking University.
In 2001, "Yanyuan architecture of Weiming Lake" was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit. Since then, students have called Weiming lake, boyata tower and library "a tower lake map".

Live water engineering
Wanquan River flows from south to north through Haidian Town, Peking University, Tsinghua University and Dashiqiao, and joins Qinghe River through Jingbao railway, with a total length of 9.5 km. The river water is used to irrigate the surrounding green space on weekdays. In flood season, it undertakes the task of urban sewage discharge in the basin of 21 square kilometers. It is also the only supply water source for Yuanmingyuan Heritage Park. With the increase of urban population, Wanquan River is no longer beautiful. The large amount of domestic sewage discharged into the surrounding cities of Wanquan River makes it a smelly river. At the beginning of the pollution control project, the silt in the river was 0.5m to 1.2m thick. It is understood that the Wanquan River treatment project costs 72.8 million yuan, which is jointly funded by Beijing municipal government and Haidian District government. The purpose is to clear the Wanquan River flowing through Peking University, Tsinghua University, Yuanmingyuan and Zhongguancun High Tech Park, and make Fuhai Lake in Yuanmingyuan and Weiming Lake in Peking University become a pool of clear water. The pollution control project started on April 18, 2001, and has been completed The project is completed.
characteristic
When people enter the west gate of Peking University guarded by stone lions, they can see a pair of beautiful Chinese watches standing in the half open space surrounded by the office building and the veranda. If you continue to walk eastward, no matter which road you take to enter the garden space with Weiming Lake as the main body, you will feel suddenly enlightened. In the whole Yanyuan garden, Weiming lake is more like a vast ocean. Under the action of light, the lake seems to harbor thousands of stars and emit ever-changing light. On the Bank of Weiming lake, you can see the shadow of the light tower in the East, the sunset in the Bell Pavilion in the west, the trees in the lake mountain in the south, and the shadow of the buildings in the north, all of which are full of poetic and picturesque. Therefore, some people summed up the essence of Yanyuan as "a pagoda lake map" (namely, a teaching or integration, boyata, Weiming lake, Peking University Library).
Cultural relics in the lake area
There are fanwei stone fish, Qianlong poem stele, flower temple, famous war reporter Edgar Snow tomb and so on.
The surrounding scenery
[tower]
Tower refers to a thirteen level Pagoda with dense eaves in the southeast of Weiming lake, which is reflected in the blue waves. This is a well dug by Yanjing University in July 1924 to solve the problem of domestic water. It has abundant water resources, and its shape is similar to that of the ancient burning lamp Pagoda in Tongzhou. It was built with dense eaves bricks of the Liao Dynasty. The tower has 13 levels, up to 37 meters in height. Except for the base of the tower, it is all built with reinforced concrete. Because the pagoda was mainly donated by the uncle of Bo Chenguang, a professor of philosophy at Yanjing University at that time, it was also named "Boya pagoda".
The location of Boya tower seems to be ordinary, but it is also the designer's ingenious arrangement and careful choice. Its high tower body can make its beautiful figures from different angles appear inside and outside the campus. The tower itself can be said to be a work of turning stone into gold. As an indispensable structure for campus water supply, if it is not handled properly, it is likely to ruin the scenery. However, this water tower takes advantage of the high terrain and adopts a special treatment method in the scenic area. It takes ingenious architectural modeling for the structure, turns the disadvantage into the advantage, and becomes a masterpiece of highly unified use function, artistic modeling and environmental coordination. If you follow the spiral ladder up to the top of the tower, you can have a panoramic view of Beijing's Xishan mountains from afar, which makes you open-minded; if you look down, you can see that the Chenghu lake is like a mirror, the shadow of the tower can be seen, and with the clear waves, you can see endless poetry. No wonder Peking University calls the landscape here "Huguang tower shadow".
[Lake]
Lake refers to Weiming lake, which is based on the original natural water surface. According to people familiar with the matter, its name is inspired by Professor Qian Mu. The reason why it is famous is that the masters who once walked and concentrated by the lake were influenced by their free, profound and distant thoughts, which gave birth to a unique aura of the lake and the garden. A poem was once popular in Peking University
Weiming lake is an ocean,
Poets hide under the water,
All souls are a fish,
It's going to jump out of the water.
Jingchun garden in Weiming, Hubei Province, lost its roll shed roof when Yuanmingyuan was burned. However, its wooden frame still stands erect, and there is an old vertical flower gate with a couplet that reads "happy heaven knows its destiny, safe earth and benevolence". How many years have passed, here is still verdant trees, lotus pond Ying green, to a certain extent, retain the style of the old garden.
On the lake, people will also notice that adjacent to the base of the stranded stone boat is a vivid stone fish. It was originally a relic in front of the Western Tower of Yuanmingyuan. In 1930, the graduates of Yanjing University bought it back as a gift to their alma mater. From then on, the stone fish in Yuanmingyuan swam freely to the lake Weiming, leaping on the water and enjoying its beauty.
On the hillside in the southwest of the lake, there is an exquisite hexagonal Bell Pavilion. Inside the pavilion, there is a bronze bell engraved with dragon, sea waves and eight trigrams. Outside the pavilion, there are ancient trees and green branches in the jungle. They are in harmony and become a simple and heavy scene in the Yanyuan garden. Listening to the new year's bell has become an important task for Peking University people to say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new year Show.
[picture]
The picture refers to the library of Peking University, which has more than 11 million volumes (pieces) of literature. It is the largest library of universities in Asia. It has nurtured numerous outstanding scholars and is a real academic palace. Chen Duxiu, Cai Yuanpei, Hu Shi, Li Dazhao and Wen Yiduo, the pioneers of the new culture movement, carry a profound and rich modern Chinese history.
Even today, sitting quietly on the lakeside, it is easy to remind people of many masters in Yanyuan, the pavilions they used to go in and out, the lakeside they used to sit in, the ancient trees they used to enjoy the cool, the years, the vicissitudes, the spirit and the passion they had. Perhaps the greatest charm of this garden comes from a profound and profound cultural heritage.
Original name
In 1930, Qian Mu, a master of Chinese culture, was invited to teach in Yanjing University. One day, Leighton Stuart, the supervisor of Yanjing University, held a banquet at his home to entertain his new colleagues. Leighton Stuart is called supervisor. In fact, he is in charge of all the affairs of Yanjing University. The Ministry of education stipulates that the president must appoint Chinese people, which is just in vain.
When Leighton Stuart asked about your impressions after arriving at the University, Qian Mu said bluntly that it was said that Yanjing University is the most Chinese Church University in China. Now it seems that it is not like this. When you enter the school gate, you will see the "m" building and "s" building (named after the initials of American donors). What do you mean? What is Sinicization? We should use Chinese names. The whole room was silent. As a result, Stuart changed "m" building to "Mu" building, "s" building to "Shi" building, "Beigong" building to "office" building, and other buildings were given Chinese names. There is a lake in the garden, which has a wonderful scenery. Everyone competed to name it, but they were not satisfied. Finally, they named it "Weiming Lake".
