Historical legend
Legend of Lingzhao Temple site selection
There is a beautiful and moving legend about the location of Lingzhao Temple: the eminent monk Lianfeng of the Yuan Dynasty traveled all the way to Yuxi. He fell in love with the beautiful scenery of Lingzhao mountain and was unwilling to leave, so he built an nunnery with thatch to practice in Lingzhao mountain. Because of his eloquence and strict discipline, Lianfeng Zen master was welcomed by Yuxi people. People donated money to help him build Lingzhao temple. Lianfeng Zen master became the founder of Lingzhao temple. Later, Lianfeng Buddhist monk traveled all over the famous mountains in Central Yunnan, widely built Buddhist temples, successively built Panlong temple in Jinning, Yuantong Temple in Kunming, Anning juezhao temple and Puzhao temple in Kunming, and finally died in Panlong temple. So there is a poem: "three according to a smooth, the fruit in Panlong." Among them, "Sanzhao", namely Lingzhao temple in Yuxi, Puzhao temple in Kunyang and juezhao temple in Anning, are all famous temples in Central Yunnan.
General Li Hongxiang and Lingzhao Temple
On the right side of Haihui tower is the magnificent Lingzhao temple. On the left and right sides of the temple are the Tianwang hall with four vivid vajras. One side of the Tianwang hall is inlaid with a stele of rebuilding Lingzhao temple, which is engraved with the inscription donated by General Li Hongxiang. According to Aunt Zhao, the resident of the temple, it is a relic left by general Li Hongxiang when he rebuilt Lingzhao temple during the period of the Republic of China. General Li Hongxiang was a native of Beihu village, Daying street, Yuxi. He studied in Japan with Tang Jiyao and took part in the Chongjiu uprising in Yunnan, which overthrew the rule of the Qing Dynasty in Yunnan. In 1918, General Li Hongxiang, who was outside the province, heard that his father had passed away in Yuxi. He secretly went back to his hometown to mourn. After being discovered by the enemy, he sent assassins to Yuxi to wait for an opportunity. Li Hongxiang was protected by his fellow villagers. After burying his father, he didn't go home. After dressing up in the graveyard, he was escorted by the villagers along the path to leave his hometown. He passed Lingzhao mountain. It was late at night when he arrived at the ruins of Lingzhao temple. Li Hongxiang had to hide in the mountains all night. That night, he made a wish that "one day, we must rebuild Lingzhao Temple". In 1933, General Li Hongxiang proposed to rebuild Lingzhao temple and took the lead in donating money.
After the completion of Lingzhao temple, Li Hongxiang personally wrote couplets for Lingzhao Temple: good mountain is the home, watching Phoenix in the south, dragon and horse in the north, and Daisy surrounded by Buddha land; Huiyue is in the sky, with jade water in front, cup and lake in the distance, and a clear light of Zen heaven.
