archaeological discovery
When the cultural relics department of Alxa Right Banner of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region conducted a cultural relics survey in July 2009, a new handprint rock painting, the taonaigaole cave handprint rock painting, was found in Yabuli town. So far, there are three handprint rock paintings distributed in Alxa Right Banner.
According to relevant records, the discovery of handprint rock paintings was limited to foreign countries. In 1998, China first discovered two handprint rock paintings in Alashan Right Banner, namely Bubu handprint color rock painting and elesenhutele handprint color rock painting. The discovery of handprint rock paintings in taonaigaole Grottoes is of great historical and scientific value for the study of human life history, art history and environmental evolution.
Taonaigaole's handprint rock painting is located in taonaigaole cave in xinhuduggacha, Yabulai Town, Alxa Right Banner. The cave is about 20 meters above the ground, and the entrance is south. The cave is about 6.8 meters wide, 2 meters high, and 4.4 meters deep. There are 23 maroon and grayish black painted handprint rock paintings and one maroon painted symbol distributed on the stone wall and top of the cave. Most of the pictures are well preserved. Among the 23 handprint rock paintings, 11 left handprint and 6 right handprint can be clearly identified, and the other 5 are blurred. In addition, seven stone circle sites with diameters ranging from 2 meters to 8 meters are distributed on both sides of the river bed about 60 meters due south of the cave. Whether these sites are related to the cave's handprint rock paintings remains to be further studied.
After measuring and comparing the painting style, hand shape characteristics, fingerprint color and painting methods, the professionals preliminarily determined that the taonaigaole fingerprint rock painting, Bubu fingerprint rock painting and elesen huttler fingerprint rock painting belong to the same period, but the determination of the age of the rock painting needs further demonstration.
