Capital Theatre is a special performance venue of Beijing People's Art Theatre. It was founded in 1954 and is located in Wangfujing Street in Beijing. The capital theater often performs the repertoire of people's art platoon, such as "four generations in one hall", "Thunderstorm", "Longxugou", "Libai" and other classic works, and the leading role is generally the old opera bone artists.

The capital theater is designed by Chinese Theater designer Lin Leyi. It covers a total area of 0.75 hectares, with a total construction area of 15000 square meters and a construction cost of 2.55 million yuan.
In the 1950s, the capital theatre won the Excellent Architectural Creation Award of the 1950s issued by the Chinese Architectural Association, and was selected into the authoritative British "general history of World Architecture".
On September 29, 2016, the capital theatre was selected into the list of "the first batch of Chinese 20th century architectural heritage".
Evolution of construction
On January 28, 1953, Zhou Yang, Vice Minister of culture, and Zhang Youyu and Wu Han, vice mayors of Beijing, jointly called Premier Zhou Enlai to apply for the construction of a theater for drama.
On April 27, 1953, the foundation of the capital theater was officially laid.
In early February 1954, the capital theater was officially named.
In 1955, the capital theater was officially completed and opened to the public.
On August 20, 1956, the capital theater officially belonged to Beijing People's Art Theater.
In 1999, the Beijing municipal government allocated 70 million yuan for the first comprehensive renovation of the capital theater after its completion.
Architectural pattern
Auditorium
The auditorium of capital theatre is a rectangle, 24 meters wide, 26 meters long and 12.5 meters high, with 1302 seats, including 900 seats in the pool seat and 402 seats in the floor. There are edge platforms on both sides of the floor. The ceiling is decorated with centralized large flowers.
Central Hall
The central hall of capital theater is 19.5 meters deep, 26.5 meters wide and 18.5 meters high. The platform is 13 meters wide and 8.5 meters high. It has an electric movable platform with auxiliary platforms on both sides. There is a turntable in the center of the basic platform with a diameter of 16 meters. There is a music pool for 80 people in front of the platform. Rehearsal hall, dressing room and waiting area are arranged at the back of the center.
Architectural features
In terms of architectural style, the capital theatre draws lessons from the architectural styles of Europe and Russia, embodies the perfect combination of eastern and Western architectural arts, and gives people a sense of solemnity and elegance. The design of the capital theatre has a strong traditional style of Central Asia. The plane and shape composition are similar to those of Tashkent theatre, but it reflects the characteristics of traditional Chinese architecture in architecture and interior and exterior decoration, For example, the use of queti, efang, Yingbi, Caijing, Huabiao and lefen color paintings make this symmetrical and solemn modern building have a strong Chinese architectural art style.

Value significance
Capital theater is the first professional theater built after the founding of new China to perform drama.
On the first floor of the capital theatre, there is the only theatre bookstore and Cao Yu Memorial Hall in Beijing. On the second floor of the theater, there is an art gallery of old artists, in which there are traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy works of old actors. The fourth floor of the theatre is the only Theatre Museum in China. The blue brick and gray tile decoration, together with the wax statues of Cao Yu and other famous dramatists and a large number of historical materials, make the hundred year history of Chinese drama come to the fore.
