brief introduction
When it comes to the Tang monk in journey to the west, no one knows. The prototype of Tang monk is Xuanzang of Tang Dynasty. Xuanzang, an eminent monk of the Tang Dynasty, was born in Chenhe village, one kilometer north of Goushi Town, Yanshi City, Henan Province. Xuanzang's hometown, 40 kilometers southeast of Luoyang, is on the north side of 207 National Highway. At the foot of Fenghuang Mountain in Goushi Town, Yanshi City, there is a Fenghuang valley. Chenhe village in the east of the valley is the Tang Dynasty
The date of Xuanzang's birth is not recorded in many historical books. However, in Chenhe village, Goushi Town, Yanshi City, Xuanzang's hometown, Chen's descendants inherit it from generation to generation, and hold the commemoration of Xuanzang's birthday on the ninth day of March every year. But there is another saying that Xuanzang's birthday is the 14th day of the first month of the lunar calendar. It is generally believed that the inheritance of Chen's descendants should also be a basis in the absence of historical records. Therefore, the ninth day of the third month of the lunar calendar is adopted as the birthday of Xuanzang.
In 602, he was born in Chenhe village, northeast of nangoushi Town, Yanshi county. The village has a beautiful scenery. Chen Hui, Xuanzang's father, was a Buddhist all his life. Chen Su, his second brother, was sent to Luoyang Pure Land Temple by his father to be a monk. Chen Yi, who was intelligent in nature, came into contact with Buddhist scriptures when he was young, and developed a strong interest in Buddhism.
At the age of 11, Xuanzang went to the Pure Land Temple with the history as a monk, named Xuanzang. He was not satisfied with the Buddhist knowledge he learned in Luoyang. He went to Chang'an to visit famous teachers, study classics, and read many books. He found that the Buddhist scriptures were not completely consistent with each other. Therefore, he decided to explore the mystery of Buddhism in India, the birthplace of Buddhism.
In the third year of Tang Zhenguan (629), at the age of 27, Xuanzang embarked on his journey to the West. During the five years since then, Xuanzang has fully understood the origin of Buddhism. During this period, he missed his motherland, set out with 657 Buddhist scriptures and relic statues in the 17th year of Zhenguan (643), and returned to his hometown in the 19th year of Zhenguan.
Since then, he began to organize and translate the classics in Hongfu temple. Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty summoned Xuanzang and praised him for his hard work in the West. He also built dacien temple for him in Chang'an, which became Xuanzang's school for translating and writing scriptures. In the past nine years, he translated 1335 volumes of the Chinese classics and wrote the records of the western regions of the Tang Dynasty, which is an important document for the study of ancient India, Nepal, Pakistan and Central Asia, and serves as a reference for the cultural exchanges between China and India
He made a great contribution. In the process of preaching, translating and disseminating Buddhist thoughts, Xuanzang founded Ci'en sect (also known as FA Xiang sect), which became a sect of Mahayana Buddhism. His spirit of assiduous study and outstanding achievements are respected by people. Tang Seng temple was built in Fenghuang Valley on Majian river near Chenhe village, his hometown. After more than 1000 years of vicissitudes, the temple is still preserved. It can be seen that the well preserved hall was rebuilt during the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty. There are also stone inscriptions in the courtyard, which express people's deep memory of Xuanzang.
In 1986, the people of Yanshi county set up the monument of Xuanzang's hometown to recall his deeds.

dispute
Local people (including Buddhist circles) believe that the birthplace of master Xuanzang is in Xuanzang temple in Huacheng village, Fudian Town, Yanshi City, while Yanshi municipal government believes that it is in Xuanzang's hometown in Chenhe village, Goushi Town, Yanshi City.
The result of academic research is that the "hometown of Xuanzang" in Chenhe village of Goushi town is not the real birthplace of master Xuanzang in history. Du Jinpeng, from the Institute of archaeology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, once wrote the article "the old city of Huaguo and the hometown of Xuanzang", which was published in the fourth issue of Heluo spring and Autumn Annals in 1992. He clearly pointed out that the hometown of Xuanzang in Chenhe village, Goushi town was wrong. At the second Tongchuan International Symposium on Xuanzang, Wen Yucheng and Liu Jianhua also pointed out that, The fact that Xuanzang's hometown was in Huacheng village, Fudian town;
This article is also included in the papers of the second Tongchuan Xuanzang International Symposium. On August 16, 2004, Luoyang evening news also reported that Xuanzang's hometown was in Fudian town.
Since the people, the educational circles and the academic circles have all made such a determination, why can there be "twins"? Originally, in order to promote the development of local tourism, the local government was eager to open the gold lettered signboard of "Xuanzang's hometown", so it invested in the construction of Xuanzang's hometown in Chenhe village, Goushi Town, and held various seminars on master Xuanzang here to "rectify the name" of this place. At the same time, when master Xuanzang was identified as a world cultural celebrity by UNESCO, he deliberately packaged the place and pushed it to the world "stage" regardless of its authenticity.
Since then, scholars and experts have questioned the "hometown of Xuanzang" in Chenhe village, Goushi Town, and believe that Xuanzang temple in Huacheng village, Fudian town is the birthplace of Xuanzang. But this appeal is obviously helpless and powerless compared with the strong government behavior! Now, the "hometown of Xuanzang" in Chenhe village of Goushi Town, which was launched by the local government, has a certain popularity, so it is difficult for the government to recover it.
