Changsha Helong Stadium is located in the northwest of Changsha new century sports and cultural center. The main project is 8 floors (9 floors in some parts), with a building area of 11758600 square meters. The external walls above 5 floors are circular shear walls. The lowest roof elevation is 28.8 meters, and the highest is 33 meters. The whole frame is composed of 484 frame columns. The main part of the whole appearance is decorated with the most popular glass curtain wall in the world.

Helong Stadium can accommodate 60000 spectators. The construction area of steel roof project is 45700 square meters, and the steel consumption is 3552 tons. Helong Stadium has four doors, East, West, North and south. Cable point glass curtain wall is used at the top of the four doors, and large plate glass curtain wall is used at the exit of the four doors. The entrance and exit of VIP passage adopts frame type glass curtain wall structure, which is supported by steel framework and composite aluminum plate to ensure that all performances meet the design requirements. The "flower of the century" design scheme of Helong Stadium skillfully integrates traditional culture and modern art. The top cover of the main stadium symbolizes a blooming hibiscus flower, and the flowers mean applause and honor. The north and south facades of the main stadium show the shape of "white crane shining its wings", which symbolizes that the sports cause of Changsha in Hunan is flying like a white crane.

The shape of the stadium is novel, majestic, romantic and symbolic: the top cover is composed of 12 petal shaped aluminum zinc plated plates (12 means time tunnel, reflecting the treasure of time and the pursuit of speed) from north to south to East. The West layer is stacked like white clouds, reflecting the design's understanding and grasp of the artistic beauty of "blue sky and white clouds". Things look like the curtain is slowly opening, giving people a bright stars, singing and dancing happy scene. At the same time, Xiaoxiang people have the association of Xiangjiang River, their mother river. Each piece of petal shaped steel frame is connected, and the feeling and form of space layer under the eaves are intentionally highlighted. The slight gradual change of plate transition is paid attention to, and the expression of space curve and outline transmitted by the roof in ancient architecture with modern roof is further explored.

Historical evolution

Helong Stadium is a comprehensive and multi-functional modern stadium. It is also the first large-scale comprehensive stadium named after a national leader in China. The name of the stadium is inscribed by General Wang Zhen himself, with powerful font.

The original site of the project is "shantangchong" (also known as "Wuma bengcao") in Changsha, Hunan Province. In 1950, Changsha municipal government planned this area as a sports venue.

In 1952, the stadium was initially built and its rudiment was formed.

In 1960, an additional track and field field, a football field and a grandstand were built and named "Hunan Provincial Working People's Stadium".
