Protection and repair
Since 1997, with the support of Nanjing Municipal People's government, Nanjing University has started to protect Rabe's former residence and started planning to build it into a memorial hall.
In September 2003, when Johannes law, then president of Germany, visited Nanjing University, he expressed concern about Rabe's former residence. Following Mr. President's visit to Nanjing, Mr. Ai Wei, vice president of Siemens (China) Co., Ltd., general manager of Siemens Jiangsu Province, and Mr. gailke, President of Jiangsu Boxi home appliance sales Co., Ltd., have been communicating with Nanjing University on the renovation project of Rabe's former residence since the summer of 2004. With the unremitting efforts of all parties, the renovation project of Rabe's former residence was successfully started at the end of 2005.
In December 2005, the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai, Siemens (China) Co., Ltd. and Jiangsu Bosi home appliance sales Co., Ltd. signed an agreement with Nanjing University to jointly build "Rabe and international security zone Memorial" and "Rabe international peace and conflict resolution research and exchange center". The construction fund was donated by Germany, and Nanjing University was responsible for the construction of the former residence Repair, construction and management of the memorial hall. The preservation of Rabe's former residence and the construction of the memorial hall have also received strong support from relevant units and individuals of Jiangsu Province and Nanjing municipal government.

Some 400 Chinese and foreign guests attended the opening ceremony. Professor Thomas Rabe, Rabe's grandson, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. "At any time, for peace, we will not be afraid of hardship," he said He pointed out that we sincerely hope that the "memorial hall" and "research and exchange center" can contribute to the reconciliation of the 1937 Nanjing historical events, and at the same time promote people's thinking on how to avoid conflicts in time and maintain world peace. Thomas is the keeper of Rabe's diary and a professor of medicine at Heidelberg University. He and his wife Ellie presented Rabe's diary in German, published in 1997 under the title of a good German man in Nanjing, to representatives of Jiangsu Province and Nanjing municipal government, leaders of Nanjing University, representatives of Siemens in Nanjing and speakers at the ceremony.
