Future development
Due to the inappropriate location of the pavilion and the lack of government funding, the annual loss of the pavilion amounts to HK $3.5 million. Although the pavilion has held two fund-raising activities and raised considerable funds for the construction of the pavilion and the purchase of equipment, so that the pavilion can operate on its current scale until the end of 2012, in the long run, in the face of financial pressure and uncertain factors such as the land use of the pavilion, the pavilion has decided to inspect it in 2009 If we discuss the prospect of the Maritime Museum, we do not rule out that the museum will be closed after the lease expires in 2010.
For this purpose, the museum submitted a letter of intent to the Home Affairs Bureau on January 11, 2008, and requested the government property department to grant an area of 2400 square meters (originally planned to be used as restaurants and tea seats) of pier 8 (Star Ferry Pier) of Central Pier to the Hong Kong Maritime Museum as a new museum. As the lease of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum's current site at Murray house will expire on August 31, 2010, and the Central Reclamation Project will take several years to complete, the museum plans to successfully move to the new site before August 2010. The government, on the other hand, expressed its support for the continued development of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum. It believed that the museum's theme was the history of Hong Kong's shipping development, which was complementary to the long-term exhibition "Hong Kong Story" of the Hong Kong Museum of history. It also said that it would discuss the relocation with the museum.
The Hong Kong Maritime Museum, formerly located in Murray house, Stanley, was relocated to pier 8, central in February 2013.
