Historical evolution
Founded in 1896, the temple was built under the leadership of Muslim soldiers in the British Indian garrison at a cost of 15 million Hong Kong dollars. The site of the temple is in the wefelu barracks. It was renovated in 1902. By the end of 1970s, the subway project running through Tsim Sha Tsui at that time caused cracks in the mosque. Therefore, after receiving compensation from the MTR Corporation, it was convenient to rebuild the mosque in 1980. In the process, it was also supported by donations from Muslims at home and abroad. The current building was rebuilt in 1984.
By 1980, many parts of the temple had collapsed, and various Islamic groups and Muslims in Hong Kong had raised funds to rebuild it. It was completed in 1984 with a construction cost of nearly HK $30 million. During this period, it was funded by the Islamic World Union. It is the largest Islamic mosque in Hong Kong, covering 1500 square meters. The whole temple is made of plain white marble. The arched threshold of the window grating is quite exquisite. There are minarets at the four corners of the marble roof, which are full of Islamic color. In the Chinese society, Hong Kong is undoubtedly unique.
The temple is a magnificent building with a tall and straight tower, a peach shaped arch and a snow-white outer wall. It has Islamic architectural features and is located in the center, so it attracts the attention of many citizens and tourists. In the absence of modern architectural knowledge, the Jiulong mosque, after the baptism of wind and rain, is constantly damaged, including the internal structure. At the beginning of the 19th century, many Islamic seamen did not have formal residences or dormitories. They lived together in central (the present morrow Street). The first main activities of some Islamic seamen were carried out on a street in the area. At that time, some non Muslims would not pass through the street with pork to avoid hurting each other's feelings. A few years later, as the Muslims moved, their shops were replaced by local antique shops.
At that time, in Hong Kong under British rule, more and more Muslims from India became Hong Kong Police, Navy, prison guards, shipyard guards, administrators, bank clerks, etc. With more and more Muslim troops stationed in Hong Kong, Islamic culture began to spread, and some Islamic organizations began to be established to represent different parts of Islamic society. Board of trust is an official Islamic Organization recognized by the Hong Kong government at the beginning of the 20th century. When Muslims in the British garrison were stationed in the Kowloon Peninsula, they asked their superiors for a place where hundreds of people could gather to hold various religious activities, such as jute. Whitifeld armybarracks, at the junction of Austin Road and Nathan Road, became their temporary gathering place. Six years later, in 1896, the first mosque on the Kowloon Peninsula was built. This Moorish mosque was mainly built by the garrison and their superiors.
After the baptism of wind and rain, the Jiulong mosque, which was built under the background of building knowledge, was constantly damaged, including the internal structure. Although Islamic organizations concerned have invested a lot of money in repair, some of the buildings can no longer be used. So in 1975, people were hired to redraw and reconstruct the fallen parts. However, the redevelopment has not been approved by the Architectural Services Department, and the redevelopment has been delayed again and again. The Mass Transit Railway Corporation started the construction of the mass transit railway in 1976. The mosque built beside Tsim Sha Tsui station was affected by the construction, which aggravated the damage. In 1978, the blasting works carried out by the Mass Transit Railway Corporation near the mosque led the Architectural Services Department to define the mosque as a dangerous building requiring urgent maintenance. However, the repair plan has not been approved. After several twists and turns, the Planning Department agreed to amend the lease so that the Kowloon Mosque could be rebuilt. Now the mosque is a mosque with beautiful architecture.
The Muslim society plan of Hong Kong raised 15 million Hong Kong dollars (equivalent to 1.9 million US dollars) to rebuild the Kowloon Mosque. The current house of the temple was built in 1984. At that time, the design was unreasonable. For example, the area of women's worship and study was too small, and the construction quality was not high. The waterproof performance of the roof was aging, and the materials of the sewage system were old. The main reason was that the overall area was not fully utilized.
The Kowloon Mosque is the office of the Islamic center of Hong Kong. Said udin, Secretary General of the Hong Kong Islamic Foundation, told the associated press that more than half of the funds needed have been raised, of which 3.2 million Hong Kong dollars were donated by the government of Kuwait. He firmly believes that after the formulation of a reasonable plan, the Muslim brothers at home and abroad will enthusiastically help build the mosque. The mosques in Hong Kong best reflect the Muslim world nature of the international business port of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Every Friday, the main matinee day, Muslims from all over the world worship side by side, regardless of each other. Therefore, the reconstruction of mosques has received the support of the Hong Kong government and international attention.
Secretary General udin said that fund-raising started in March and ended in October. After the news of rebuilding the Kowloon Mosque came out, it received positive responses from all over the country.
