As for Baishi street, before the Opium War, many foreign ships were moored in the sea area of jinxingmen on Qi'ao Island. In October 1833, there was a serious conflict between the foreign opium crew and the villagers of Qi'ao village. The foreign opium dealers organized more than ten armed sampans to fire at Qi'ao village, and the villagers of Qi'ao fought back their attack. On the eve of the Opium War, the Chinese people spontaneously fought against the invasion of foreign colonists on a large scale and in an earlier time. It was eight years earlier than the struggle against Britain in Sanyuanli, Guangzhou, and occupied an important position in the history of modern Sino foreign relations. Up to now, the village still retains the headquarters against the aggressors, the temple of heaven and the fort.
In 1833, the people of Qi'ao Island defeated the invading colonial invaders with great courage, forcing them to surrender and compensate for 3000 liang of silver. In order to let future generations remember the glorious history of Chinese people's victory in resisting foreign aggression and inspire future generations to love their motherland more, the local villagers built a 2 km long granite "Baishi Street" with reparations, which is now well preserved on the island.
