Zhongshan Avenue turns east from here. Four 40 meter wide boulevards, Zhongshan East Road, Zhongzheng Road (now Zhongshan South Road), Hanzhong Road and Zhongshan Road, meet here, forming a circular Xinjiekou square in the middle, separated by a bronze statue of Sun Yat Sen.
In 1929, Xinjiekou was first planned as a commercial district according to the capital plan. In 1940s, Xinjiekou developed into a commercial and financial center, where banks, hotels, shopping malls, newspapers and cinemas gathered. Xinjiekou became the core of Nanjing.

Historical evolution
The history of Xinjiekou in Nanjing can be traced back to 1500 years ago. Five meters underground, the archaeological site is U-shaped. The excavation of wooden piles and porcelain tiles in the tunnel proves that the rivers in Xinjiekou area were crisscross and the water network was developed.
In the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, the place name of Xinjiekou appeared, which was originally a street between tangfangqiao and mingwalong.
Before 1928, Xinjiekou was an old block.
In August 1928, after the construction of Zhongshan Avenue began, Xinjiekou gradually became the special name of the connection point between Zhongshan Road and Zhongshan East Road.
On June 1, 1929, after Dr. Sun Yat Sen's Fengan ceremony, the Capital Construction Committee of the national government decided to widen the area around Xinjiekou. In December, the capital plan planned Xinjiekou as a business district, and the capital construction between 1927 and 1937 changed the face of Xinjiekou completely. At that time, the Capital Construction Committee of the national government decided to widen and transform Xinjiekou, planning Xinjiekou as a commercial district for the first time. In the following seven years of "capital construction", Zhongshan East Road, Zhongzheng Road (changed to Zhongshan South Road after liberation), Hanzhong Road and Zhongshan Road, four 40 meter wide boulevards, intersected at Xinjiekou, forming a circular square in the middle and separated by a sculpture of Sun Yat Sen, became the transportation hub of the whole Nanjing city.
On November 12, 1930, the Xinjiekou square project started on the 64th birthday of Dr. Sun Yat Sen and was completed on January 20, 1931. It took more than three months. It was the first square in Nanjing, so it was called the first square, also known as Xinjiekou square. The purpose was to boycott foreign goods, promote national goods, and develop national industry and commerce. But in less than two years, the central shopping mall was forced to close because of the Japanese invasion.
In December 1937, before the Japanese occupied Nanjing, a huge bomb model was placed in the center of Xinjiekou square. This model was made for holding air defense exhibition after the establishment of the air defense committee of the Military Commission of the national government in 1935. It is intended to remind people to be alert to the Japanese air attack.
On November 12, 1942, the eve of the 76th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, Wang Jingwei, chairman of the Wang puppet national government, moved the bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, which had been placed in the Central Military Academy since 1929, to the center of Xinjiekou square in order to win the hearts of the people.

Architectural pattern
Xinjiekou square
Xinjiekou square is located in the center of Xinjiekou and at the intersection of four roads. East Zhongshan road leads to Zhongshan Gate, south Zhongshan road leads to Zhonghua Gate, West Hanzhong Road leads to Hanzhong Gate, and North Zhongshan road leads to Gulou square. In November 1942, the Wang puppet government moved the bronze statue of Sun Yat Sen from the Central Military Academy to the center of Xinjiekou square.
Before 2001, Xinjiekou square had always been an island building. In 2001, due to the construction of Metro Line 1, the square was demolished and the bronze statue of Sun Yat Sen (1996 version) was moved. After the Spring Festival in 2010, he returned to Xinjiekou with the 1996 version of Sun Yat Sen's bronze statue. Taking the bronze statue of Sun Yat Sen as the center, the surrounding area is expanded into an 8-meter-diameter ring Island, and a 1-meter-wide paved road is added to the periphery of the ring island. Finally, the whole center is a 10 meter diameter ring Island belt. At the same time, the surrounding landscape is mainly green, and the landscape has flowers in three seasons and evergreen in four seasons.
The bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat Sen stands in the center of Xinjiekou square. It is carved by sculptor Dai Guangwen. It is 5.75 meters high and weighs 6.2 tons. It is dressed in a suit and coat, a vest and a tie. It holds a civilized stick in the right hand and steps forward on the left leg. It is based on the background of Dr. Sun Yat Sen's taking office as the provisional president of the Republic of China in Nanjing in 1912. It captures the instant image of Dr. Sun Yat Sen's running and walking for the revolution and solidifies into a permanent picture. The first bronze statue to be erected on Xinjiekou square in Nanjing was presented by Sun Yat Sen's Japanese friend, Zhuangji Meiwu. It was designed by the Japanese "Shinohara gold workshop" and made by the sculptor Xiangya Murata. The bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat Sen was originally placed in the "Central Military Academy". In November 1942, on the eve of the 76th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, Wang Jingwei moved the bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat Sen from the "Central Military Academy" to Xinjiekou square in order to win the hearts of the people. In 1995, the 70th anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat Sen's death, the new bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat Sen carved by Dai Guangwen began to stand in the center of Xinjiekou square. In 2001, the bronze statue of Sun Yat Sen was removed during the construction of Nanjing Metro Line 1. On the evening of May 19, 2010, the "bronze statue of Sun Yat Sen", which had been away from the central square of Xinjiekou in Nanjing for more than nine years, was officially moved back to the south.
