natural resources
The stone houses in Shitouzhai are very distinctive: they are built from top to bottom along a rocky hillside. The stone houses are stacked in layers, row upon row, close to the mountains, and the layout is in good order. Some of the stone houses have the same door orientation, row by row; some of them form a main courtyard and two chamber courtyard, one by one crisscross; some of the stone houses are stone walls, with a single courtyard with a stone arch facing the door. There are also many stone benches and chairs in the bamboo forest and willow shade beside the village. The house is made of wood and stone, not one tile and one brick. There are 7, 9 and 11 columns in the roof truss, no matter it is a building with three or five rooms. In the middle of the roof truss, there are more main rooms and the ground below. On the left and right sides of the roof truss, there are more bedrooms with floors on the top and animals in the "basement" below. When building a house, first build two high house foundations with stones, generally more than 2 meters, and then erect the wooden column house on the top. Because of the high foundation, every family had to build stone steps to get in. After the house was erected, stone walls were built to seal the mountains on all sides, and thin stone slabs were used to build houses. Some were separated by stone and supported by stone columns. Some of the walls of these houses are built with block stone, cushion stone or mortar, some are built with hammers and needles, some are built with rubble, and then they are jointed with lime or concrete to form tiger skin walls. The masonry joint is close, the line level is symmetrical, the craft is exquisite, the house modelling is beautiful.
Because there are many stone mountains and water shale nearby, which provide the natural stone resources, and a large number of skilled craftsmen have been created in the long-term construction practice, the stone and wood buildings have been continuously improved. These stone houses built with local materials are not only cheap, wood saving and fire-resistant, but also comfortable and durable, warm in winter and cool in summer, with strong compartment. In particular, the advantages of not burning bricks and tiles, saving land and energy, have been praised by experts.
