China Academy of fine arts is the first comprehensive national higher art institution in China. Historical evolution
Initial stage
In 1928, Cai Yuanpei, an educator and then president of the University, set up the National Academy of art, the first comprehensive national higher art institution in China, on the Bank of Xizi Lake in Hangzhou. It has four departments of traditional Chinese painting, Western painting, sculpture and pattern, as well as preparatory and research departments. Traditional Chinese painting, Western painting and sculpture are the forerunners of today's Chinese art discipline; pattern is the forerunner of today's Chinese design discipline; and the research department is the pioneer of graduate education in Chinese art education, recruiting 8 graduate students for the first time next spring. At the beginning of the founding of the National Academy of Arts, Lin Fengmian, the first president of the Academy, advocated the school running purpose of "introducing western art, sorting out Chinese art, harmonizing Chinese and Western art, and creating art of the times".
In 1929, it was renamed "national Hangzhou art college". The school is located in Gushan, Hangzhou. The school buildings include Luoyuan of West Lake, zhaodantai, the second temple of Su Bai, etc.
In July 1937, the Japanese War of aggression against China broke out in an all-round way. In November, when Shanghai was occupied, the national Hangzhou art college retreated westward, passing through Zhuji, Guixi in Jiangxi, Changsha in Hunan, and finally to Yuanling in Hunan.
In 1938, the Ministry of education of the national government ordered the national Hangzhou art college to merge with the national Beiping Art College and change it into the "National Art College". The school is located in laoyaxi, Yuanjiang, Yuanling. The school rents local houses and builds wooden houses as temporary classrooms to resume classes.
In 1938, in order to avoid war, the school moved to Kunming, Yunnan Province. First, I borrowed the school buildings of Kunhua middle school and Kunhua primary school.
In 1939, the school relocated to Anjiang village, Chenggong County.
In 1940, the school moved to Bishan, Sichuan, and LV Fengzi took over the post of president.
In 1942, Lu Fengzi resigned because of illness, Chen Zhifo took over the post of president, and the school moved to Panxi, Shapingba, Chongqing.
In the summer vacation of 1946, the teachers and students were demobilized and returned to Hangzhou.
Cenozoic period
In November 1950, the school changed its name to East China branch of Central Academy of fine arts under the leadership of East China Ministry of culture. In the same year, the Department of Chinese painting and the Department of Western painting merged into the Department of painting. In the same year, the academic journal "Art Forum" was founded and later developed into the journal "art research".
In October 1952, the Department of practical fine arts was abolished and merged into the Central Academy of fine arts. Later, the Central Academy of Arts and crafts was established on the basis of the Department.
In 1953, the Academy was determined by the central Ministry of culture as the highest institution of fine arts education in China. In the same year, the former director and Council member of Shanghai Xinhua Art College decided to donate the school property to the East China branch of the Central Academy of fine arts.
In 1954, the affiliated secondary school of fine arts was established, with Xia Ziyi as the director and four years of schooling.
In September 1955, the Department of painting was officially abolished and three departments of color and ink painting, oil painting and print were established.
In 1956, the East China branch of the Central Academy of fine arts was transformed into Hangzhou Academy of fine arts.
In June 1957, the College moved from No.18 waixihu to the current site of Nanshan Road. In December of the same year, the Department of color and ink painting was changed to the Department of Chinese painting, which was divided into three majors: figure, landscape, flowers and birds.
In March 1958, the Department of Arts and crafts was established, with two specialties of dyeing and weaving and decoration design.
In June 1958, the college was renamed Zhejiang Academy of fine arts. In the same year, the Department of folk art was established on the basis of the folk art research group.
In 1960, ceramic specialty was added, and the Department of folk art was merged into the Department of Arts and crafts.
In 1967, influenced by the "Cultural Revolution", the college was forced to stop. Since the 1970s, the college began to recruit workers, peasants and soldiers.
In 1971, the College moved to Yangpu brigade of Tonglu County, running a school in rural areas.
In 1976, after the end of the cultural revolution, the College received new students.
Open period
In August 1978, the college became one of the first universities to resume the recruitment of postgraduates.
In 1980, the Journal of the college was resumed and named new fine arts.
In November 1981, the college was approved by the State Council as the awarding unit of master's degree in Fine Arts (the first batch).
In 1983, the Department of art education, the Department of art history and theory, the major of environmental art and some research rooms were set up.
In 1984, it was approved as a doctoral degree awarding unit in fine arts. It is one of the earliest art colleges with the right to confer doctoral degree in China.
In 1985, Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts Press (now China Academy of Fine Arts Press) was established, which is the only publishing unit of China's art colleges.
In 1986, the master's degree in design art was authorized.
In 1987, based on the teaching and research section of art theory, the Department of art history and theory was established.
In June 1988, he was awarded the first doctor's degree.
In 1993, with the approval of the State Education Commission and the Ministry of culture, the school changed its name to "China Academy of fine arts".
In June 1996, the Department of design was reorganized into four departments: visual communication, dyeing and weaving, industrial design and ceramics, and environmental art. In September of the same year, the Shanghai sea teaching base of the college began to run.
In 1997, the Shanghai teaching base was changed to Shanghai Design and art branch of China Academy of Fine Arts (later renamed as Shanghai Design Institute of China Academy of Fine Arts).
In 1999, more than 300 million yuan was allocated by the state finance, and the whole campus of Nanshan Road was transformed.
In 2000, the whole school moved to Binjiang campus on the South Bank of Qianjiang River.
Before 2000, it was under the management of the Ministry of culture. In 2000, it became a University jointly built by the people's Government of Zhejiang Province and the Ministry of culture.
In 2001, the Department of calligraphy was established.
In 2002, fine arts was rated as the only national key discipline in China.
In 2002, the new media system was established. In the same year, the school of visual arts of China Academy of fine arts was established in Xiangshan, Zhuantang. In the same year, it was approved by the Ministry of culture as the first cross Provincial National Art Examination Institution in China.
In September 2003, the new school building on Nanshan Road was completed and the departments of traditional Chinese painting, oil painting, print, sculpture, historical theory, new media and administrative departments moved back. Binjiang campus is the design branch. Then the college began to build a new campus in Xiangshan, Zhuantang Town, Xihu District.
In 2004, China Academy of fine arts was awarded the first national animation teaching and research base by the State Administration of radio, film and television.
In 2006, Zhejiang provincial Party committee made a decision to support the college to create a "world-class university".
In 2007, Xiangshan central campus, covering an area of more than 800 mu, was completed. The original Binjiang campus was used for replacement, and all the design branches moved to Xiangshan central campus. In the same year, with the approval of the Ministry of personnel of the people's Republic of China, a mobile post doctoral research station was set up in fine arts. In the same year, fine arts was once again rated as the only national key discipline in China. In the same year, Hangzhou signed a strategic cooperation agreement with China Academy of fine arts.
In 2010, it was selected into the national characteristic key discipline project "construction university".
In 2011, art science was upgraded to a discipline category, and the four disciplines of art science, design science, art theory, drama and film and television science were adjusted and established as a first-class discipline doctoral program.

In July 2013, it was selected as the first batch of study abroad demonstration base of the Ministry of education.
In 2015, China Academy of fine arts was selected as the first batch of key universities in Zhejiang Province.
In January 2016, the people's Government of Zhejiang Province, the Ministry of culture and the Ministry of education signed the "opinions on the co construction of China Academy of fine arts", and China Academy of fine arts became a tripartite co construction institution. In June, it was selected as the first batch of construction units of "universities with international characteristics in Zhejiang Province".
In January 2017, it was recognized as one of the first batch of national demonstration universities to deepen the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education. In September, China Academy of fine arts was selected as one of the first batch of "double first-class" world-class discipline construction universities in China. In November, the school was awarded the first national civilized campus honorary title.
In 2018, the school began to recruit students in Hangzhou Liangzhu campus. Shanghai Institute of design of China Academy of fine arts stopped recruiting students in 2018. The original enrollment plan of Shanghai Institute of design was transferred to Liangzhu campus. In November, it was selected as the first batch of excellent traditional Chinese culture inheritance bases of the Ministry of education.
