Taoyuan city is mainly composed of Taoyuan District and Zhongli district. It is generally divided into North Taoyuan and South Taoyuan according to ethnic distribution and living circle. Because it is adjacent to Taipei metropolitan area and many major public construction and investment are located in Taoyuan, Taoyuan Zhongli metropolitan area is formed. Taoyuan is a multi-ethnic integration area of Fujian, Hakka, other provinces and indigenous peoples. It is also a county with the largest number of foreign workers in Taiwan because of its developed industry.
On December 25, 2014, Taoyuan County was upgraded to Taoyuan city.
In 2017, the permanent resident population of Taoyuan city was 2.1 million, the total GDP was 299.009 billion yuan, and the per capita GDP was 142390 yuan.
Historical evolution
The early cultural activities of Taoyuan City are the "dayuanjianshan site" with a history of more than 2700 years. The cultural type belongs to the late Yuanshan culture of Neolithic age.
In the early period, it was mainly the residence of the kaidagland and daokasi people of Pingpu nationality. There were four tribes, nangu, Xiaoli, Guilun, and Kengzi, which lived in Taoyuan city. These four tribes are often called nangu four communities. Besides Pingpu, Taiya also lived in Taoyuan city.
In 1626 and 1642, Zheng Chenggong first colonized the Taoyuan area. Although Spanish and Dutch colonial forces successively entered the Taipei basin, they did not enter the Taoyuan area.
From the 15th year of Yongli (1661) of the Southern Ming Dynasty, Zheng Chenggong conquered the Dutch and took possession of Taiwan. He began to belong to Taiwan when he designated the northern part as Tianxing county. In the following year, Zheng Jing changed the county into a prefecture, and set up the North Road appeasement department to open up a wide range of affairs. At that time, Taoyuan city was under the jurisdiction of Tianxing Prefecture. Zheng's settlement in the south of Northern Taiwan was based in kugang, and became the main entrance and exit point of Northern Taiwan. However, due to the fact that chengtianfu (Tainan) was still the main part of Zheng's settlement in Ming Dynasty, the northern area was only developed sporadically.
In the 37th year of Yongli (1683), Zheng Kelong came down to the Qing Dynasty. The Zheng regime of the Ming Dynasty perished, and Taiwan entered the Qing Dynasty.
During the reign of Emperor Yongzheng of Qing Dynasty, Taoyuan area was still a place for Aboriginal people to live and gather because there was no large-scale development in Taoyuan area during the reign of emperor Hezhi and Ming Zheng. At that time, the vast grassland wasteland in Taoyuan was known as "humao village", which means "the land of coarse weeds", and it means "the grass hurts people like a tiger".
In 1713, the Taoyuan area was officially established. In the second year of Qianlong (1737), large-scale land reclamation began. Xue Qilong, a Hakka immigrant from Guangdong Province, led his people to reclaim Taoyuan area from Tainan. The scope of land reclamation started from guilunling (Guishan) in the East, from kuzaijiao (neili) in the west, from nangu in the North to Xiaoli in the south. Later, some immigrants planted peach trees all over the place. When the peach blossoms were in full bloom, the sea of flowers was like clouds, so it was renamed "taoziyuan", which is the origin of the name of Taoyuan city. Because the development of Taoyuan is the extension of the reclamation of Taipei basin, the development of Taoyuan area presents a trend from north to south.
After the immigration of Chinese mainland began to move in large numbers, the people of Fujian were gathered in the peach garden and the coastal areas nearby, while the Cantonese gathered in the Inland Zhongli, Ping Zhen, bayberry, Longtan and the Guanyin and new houses along the coast.
In the early Qing Dynasty, Northern Taiwan was regarded as a frontier area and less managed. Because of the complexity of ethnic groups, the fighting between Fujian, Guangdong and Zhangquan in Taoyuan area was very frequent, and there was a very complex vertical and horizontal relationship. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong, Taoyuan area gradually developed into two settlements, namely taoziyuan and jianzili (now Zhongli). After the Qing government merged the two settlements, they were named "taojianbao".
In 1894, the Sino Japanese war broke out between the Qing Dynasty and Japan. In 1895, the Qing Dynasty was defeated and signed the "Treaty of Shimonoseki" with Japan, ceding the whole island of Taiwan and the Penghu Islands to Japan. During the early period of Japanese occupation, Taiwan's administrative divisions changed frequently. From 1895 to 1901, Taoyuan belonged to Taipei County.
In 1901, Taiwan was divided into 20 halls. Most of the Taoyuan area belonged to taoziyuan hall, with six branches under its jurisdiction, including Dagu, sanjiaoyong, daqiuyuan, yangmeili, xiancaibo and Zhongli. In 1905, taoziyuan hall was renamed Taoyuan hall. In 1909, the first year of Xuantong in the Qing Dynasty, 20 halls of Taiwan were merged into 12 halls, but the jurisdiction of Taoyuan hall remained unchanged.
In 1920, the governor's office of Taiwan announced the system of Taiwan prefectures (Law No. 3 of Dazheng 9), the system of Taiwan Municipality (Law No. 5 of Dazheng 9) and the system of Taiwan Street and village (Law No. 6 of Dazheng 9), adjusted the administrative divisions, and restructured the ten departments in Western Taiwan into five prefectures (Taipei, Hsinchu, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung), including Taoyuan and Hsinchu The scope of Taoyuan County, Zhongli county and Daxi County under the jurisdiction of Hsinchu Prefecture is roughly the same as that of today's Taoyuan city.
In 1945, after the end of World War II and the surrender of Japan, Taiwan was restored. The Nationalist government took over Taiwan on behalf of the allies and changed Hsinchu Prefecture into Hsinchu County, and the county government moved to Taoyuan.
In August 1950, after the national government moved to Taiwan, the administrative region of Taiwan Province was redrawn. Hsinchu County was divided into three provincial counties: Taoyuan County, Hsinchu County and Miaoli County. After the Nationalist government moved to Taiwan, many of the military dependents from Chinese mainland moved to Taoyuan County, and Longgang District in Zhongli was famous for its large number of people in Yunnan and Burma.
On October 31, 1954, Jiaoban township was renamed Fuxing township.
On June 7, 1967, Zhongli town was transformed into Zhongli city.
In April 1971, Taoyuan town was transformed into Taoyuan city.
In the 1960s and 1970s, traditional industrial zones such as Zhongli and Guishan were established.
On February 26, 1979, Chiang Kai Shek International Airport (now Taiwan's Taoyuan International Airport) opened.
On March 1, 1992, Pingzhen township was transformed into Pingzhen city.
On January 1, 1995, bade township was transformed into bade city.
On June 7, 2010, the population of Taoyuan County exceeded 2 million. In accordance with Taiwan's local system law, the establishment of the municipality directly under the central government (referred to as "quasi municipality directly under the central government") will be applied from January 1, 2011.
In July 2012, the case of restructuring "municipality directly under the central government" was proposed. On November 23, 2012, the internal affairs department was transformed into a "municipality directly under the central government". The 3330th session of "Executive Yuan" was held on January 3, 2013, and was restructured into "municipality directly under the central government" on December 25, 2014. Its name is "Taoyuan City", becoming the third "municipality directly under the central government" in Northern Taiwan, China. The township and city under the jurisdiction of the original county were transformed into districts, with 13 districts.
