Wu Jianxiong cemetery
Wu Jianxiong's cemetery is located next to Ziwei Pavilion of Mingde school in Liuhe Town, Taicang. Wu Jianxiong, a world-famous contemporary female physicist, was born in Liuhe on May 31, 1912. She was elected as an academician of the American Academy of Sciences in 1958. In 1975, she was awarded the National Medal of science by President Ford of the United States. In the same year, she was elected as the first female president of the American Physical Society. In 1981, the president of Italy awarded her the "outstanding woman of the year award". In 1991, she was awarded the highest honor in the field of science and technology Ping Memorial Medal.
brief introduction
There is an oblique cylinder in Shao cemetery, in which Wu Jianxiong's ashes are placed. In front of it are two black marble stone balls, which are transported in from Italy. When the stone balls are powered on, they will rotate anticlockwise or clockwise and spray water from above. This design is also closely related to Wu Jianxiong's research.
To the east of the cemetery, there is a large white marble relief wall, on which Wu Jianxiong's childhood memories are carved.
Jianxiong cemetery is designed by the architectural design and Research Institute of Southeast University and approved by I.M. Pei, the world Master of architectural design. It was completed by the end of May 1998. Covering an area of 1372 square meters, the cemetery is surrounded by lawns, trees and flowers.
The cemetery consists of three parts. The western part of the cemetery is the main part of the cemetery. The main body is round, and the tomb is placed in a pool with a diameter of 9 meters. The outside of the tomb is a cylinder with an inclined surface. On the inclined surface of the cylinder is engraved with an epitaph written by Mr. Jiang CAIJIAN, the author of Wu Jianxiong. The epitaph is divided into Chinese and English. The inscription reads: "Wu Jianxiong (1912-1997), the world's most outstanding female physicist, is buried here. She has a long life Her profound scientific work shows deep thinking and insight; her willpower and devotion to her work make people think of Madame Curie; her accession to the WTO, elegance and intelligence reflect sincere love, perseverance and wisdom; she is an outstanding citizen of the world and an eternal Chinese. " There are two stone balls in front of the epitaph. Each ball weighs more than 300 kg. When the power is turned on, the stone balls will rotate slowly along with the water flow, and the water columns with different heights will be ejected from the top of the ball. They symbolize Professor Wu Jianxiong's experimental principle of "parity non conservation law" through the cobalt 60 - β decay experiment at the low temperature laboratory in Washington, USA Model. The design idea of this experimental principle model was proposed and designed by Professor Li Zhengdao, and he wrote an inscription for the shape explanation of the cemetery. The inscription reads: "according to the law of parity conservation, the evolution of two left and right completely symmetrical systems should always be left and right symmetrical. This seems to be a very reasonable law, which was overthrown by Professor Wu's Cobalt nuclear decay experiment in January 1957. In this building, the two stone balls represent two symmetrical cobalt nuclei, and the electron distribution produced by their decay is represented by water flow, which is asymmetric. This is to commemorate Wu Jianxiong's epoch-making scientific contribution. "
In the middle of the cemetery is a round platform for worshiping. There is a circular flower bed on the east side of the platform. The tomb faces the flower bed, which symbolizes that Professor Wu will always live in the flower of the motherland among the students of Mingde.
In the east of the cemetery is a circular screen wall, which is composed of eight stacks of low and high screen walls, symbolizing Professor Wu Jianxiong's footprint in climbing the scientific peak. The difference between the height of the eight walls is 50 cm, which means that Professor Wu Jianxiong died at the age of 85. Five big stone green characters of "Wu Jianxiong cemetery" inscribed by Professor Yang Zhenning are shining on the walls. There are six huge white marble reliefs embedded in the wall, which record Wu Jianxiong's main activities in his life.
On the east side of the cemetery is Wu Jianxiong science and technology building, which is integrated with the cemetery.
Architectural history
After the death of Wu Jianxiong on February 17, 1997, according to her will, the cemetery designed by the Architectural Design Institute of Southeast University and approved by I.M. Pei, the world Master of architectural design, was built at the end of May 1998 in the school of Ming morality. Yang Zhenning inscribed "Wu Jianxiong cemetery" for the cemetery, while Li Zhengdao inscribed "Wu Jianxiong cemetery".
Crape myrtle trees
This century old crape myrtle tree was planted by Wu Jianxiong's father, Mr. Wu Zhongyi, when he founded Mingde women's vocational school. It is beside Wu Jianxiong cemetery. Other things about this tree are hard to say. In a word, this tree is of extraordinary significance to Wu Jianxiong (Wu Jianxiong's nickname is crape myrtle). Under this tree, she left a lot of memories about her youth and China. It can also be said that this crape myrtle tree is a symbol of Wu Jianxiong's spirit, which is one of the reasons why Wu Jianxiong's cemetery is located under this crape myrtle tree.
