Yuhua gate
Yuhua gate, one of the new gates of the Ming Dynasty and the Republic of China, is located between Tongji gate, Wuding gate and Zhonghua Gate. It is named after Yuhuatai. Jiangning road passes through the gate from north to south, passing through the Yuhua bridge and Qinhuai River.
In 1936 (the 25th year of the Republic of China), the national government opened a city gate on the basis of the Ming city wall of Nanjing in order to connect the Beijing City railway with the Jiangnan railway at Yanghu lane and connect it with the Beijing Guangdong line.
In the 1950s, the nationwide city demolition movement spread to Nanjing, in which the yuhuamen gate and the East and west walls were demolished, and the city bricks were used to build blast furnaces or nearby houses.
In 2009, Nanjing municipal government used old city bricks to repair the yuhuamen section of the city wall and rebuild the yuhuamen city gate. There is a 5.5m wide and 6.35m high auxiliary arch on the East and west sides of the main arch, each with a slow lane and a sidewalk.
Historical evolution
Yuhuamen was opened by the national government in 1936 on the basis of the Ming Dynasty city wall in Nanjing. It was used to connect the Nanjing small railway (Beijing Railway) with the Jiangnan railway at yanghuxiang and the Beijing Guangdong line. After the victory of the Anti Japanese War, the small railway was gradually abandoned.
In the 1950s, the Yuhua gate and the East and west walls were demolished one after another.
In 2009, yuhuamen was rebuilt. On June 23 of the same year, the main part of the gate reconstruction project was completed. The main arch is about 14 meters wide and 9.9 meters high, and the auxiliary arch is about 5.5 meters wide and 6.35 meters high.
